The NASSP "Breaking Ranks" framework lays out multiple strategies for building capacity within a school, beginning with the leaders. To change an organization and increase its capacity to produce greater results, the people within the organization must change and increase their capacity. School change begins with changes in the principal, the assistant principals, and the leadership team members. Those individuals must generate greater capacity by developing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that enable and sustain effective performance. It is imperative for the principal and the leadership team to clearly demonstrate that capacity building is a priority for every adult in the school. Setting an example of substantive self-development is the first step in building a culture that ensures a safe learning environment for staff members as well as students. Identifying one's strongest skills is a great beginning to professional development. Effective development builds on strengths; therefore, a diagnosis to determine one's strengths is important for future development. "Breaking Ranks II" and "Breaking Ranks in the Middle" contain a 360-degree instrument to evaluate a set of skills that are important to leadership success. This skill set has been used in the NASSP Assessment Center for many years, and those skills represent areas of the greatest success and greatest failure for practicing school leaders. Although the 360-degree assessment is an effective development tool for individual development and capacity building, it isn't an immediate school improvement strategy. This article presents a few things one can do to start building capacity now.
