Descriptors: Auditory Perception, Bilingualism, Cognitive Processes, Interference (Language)
Foss, Donald J.; Swinney, David A. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1973
Research supported by a National Science Foundation grant to the University of Texas at Austin. (RS)
Descriptors: Auditory Perception, Experiments, Listening Comprehension, Phonemes
Jarvella, Robert J. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1971
Based on part of a dissertation submitted to the University of Michigan in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Ph.D. degree. Revised version of a paper given at the 80th Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America, Houston, Texas, November 1970. (VM)

Crowder, Robert G. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1971
Descriptors: Auditory Perception, Consonants, Experiments, Language Research
Dooling, D. James – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1974
Research is reported in which subjects were required to perceive sentences in noise. A series of sentences having the same syntax and rhythm was presented. On a final sentence either rhythm alone or rhythm plus syntax were changed. The results stress the importance of rhythm in speech perception. (Author/RM)

Smith, Edward E.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1971
Descriptors: Auditory Perception, Imagery, Information Retrieval, Memory
Peterson, Lloyd R.; Johnson, Suzanne T. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1971
Research was supported by a National Science Foundation grant to Indiana University. (VM)
Descriptors: Acoustics, Articulation (Speech), Auditory Perception, Memory
Drewnowski, Adam – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1980
The results of three experiments provide evidence that the observed detrimental effects of acoustic similarity on serial recall may be a consequence of poorer memory for the order of consonant sounds as opposed to vowel sounds. (PMJ)
Descriptors: Acoustic Phonetics, Auditory Perception, Consonants, Language Research
Engle, Randall W.; Mobley, Linda A. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
This study tests the idea that visual presentation leads to higher performance on a delayed recall test than auditory presentation. It is predicted that the normal immediate free recall procedure yields a different pattern of results on a delayed test than a condition having immediate recall of each list. (CLK)

Fraunfelder, U.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1980
The validity of using phoneme monitoring techniques to measure syntactic processing in French was validated by two experiments. Significant differences in the reaction times of 80 French-speaking academic professionals to phonemes immediately following reversible subject relative clauses and those following object relative clauses demonstrate the…

Healy, Alice F.; Cutting, James E. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Two detection experiments were conducted with short lists of synthetic speech stimuli where phoneme targets were compared to syllable targets. Results suggest that phonemes and syllables are equally basic to speech perception. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Auditory Perception, Auditory Stimuli, Cognitive Processes, Language Processing
Jacoby, Larry L. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1973
Descriptors: Auditory Perception, Cognitive Processes, Diagrams, Experiments
Mills, Carol Bergfeld – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1980
Reports two experiments which support the hypothesis that reaction time is faster to phonemes when the phonetic context matches the listener's expectation than when the vowel context is different. Reaction time to syllable targets is equal to phoneme, matched context targets. (PMJ)
Descriptors: Auditory Discrimination, Auditory Perception, Consonants, Context Clues
Kadesh, Irving; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
A study is reported in which pairs of synonyms, antonyms, coordinates, and super super-subordinates were presented dichotically to university students. After each pair the subject reported what he heard. In one condition the two members of a pair were presented simultaneously, and in another they were presented sequentially. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Associative Learning, Auditory Perception, Cognitive Processes, Language Processing
Cole, Ronald A.; Perfetti, Charles A. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1980
The early and continued use of semantic, syntactic and contextual clues in recognizing mispronounced words was demonstrated in an experiment involving preschoolers, grade school students and college students. Errors in highly predictable words and contexts were most easily recognized by all regardless of reading ability. (PMJ)
