Morosan, David E.; Jamieson, Donald G. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1989
A perceptual fading technique was used to teach unilingual adult Canadian francophones to identify the voiceless and voiced linguadental fricatives of English. After just 90 minutes of training, subjects were better able to identify both the training stimuli and an untrained set of natural consonant-vowel exemplars produced by 4 different…

Tye-Murray, Nancy – Volta Review, 1992
This review highlights research suggesting that absence of audition precludes talkers from developing typical articulatory organizational strategies and affects their abilities to produce specific speech events. The paper describes the operational model adopted for formulating experimental hypotheses and considers five roles of auditory…

Forsythe, Jere L.; Kelly, Margaret M. – Journal of Research in Music Education, 1989
Tests whether aural discrimination is significantly better when visual-spatial stimuli are paired with melodic phrases. Results suggest that the use of visual clues paired with melodies is generally an effective aid to aural discrimination among fourth-grade subjects. Recommends further research on the use of different visual stimuli. (LS)

Wallace, William P. – 1983
To determine whether the impressive rates for speed reading (e.g., 500 words per minute) can be approximated in speed listening, two experiments compared the comprehension level of material heard at a normal speaking rate with that heard at accelerated rates. In the first experiment, the major demonstration experiment, three groups of college…

Standley, Jayne M.; Madsen, Clifford K. – Journal of Research in Music Education, 1991
Presents results of a study in which music teachers and students with varying levels of experience and expertise evaluated musical performances. Finds differences in subjects with high levels of expertise are a result of more than experience. Concludes that developing an accurate measure for expertise would aid in obtaining the best role models as…

Bettison, Sue – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1996
Eighty children, ages 3 to 17, with autism or Asperger's syndrome and mild to severe distress in the presence of some sounds received either auditory training or a control condition of listening to the same music. Significant improvements in behavior, severity of autism, and IQ were achieved and maintained for 12 months by both groups. (Author/DB)
