degli Espinosa, Francesca; Wolff, Kate; Hewett, Sophie – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2021
Previous research has investigated generalized intraverbal-tacting by teaching children with autism to respond using autoclitic frames. The present study compared the effectiveness and efficiency of a Frame and a No Frame procedure across counterbalanced stimulus sets with 4 children with autism. In the Frame condition, children were taught to…

Cihon, Joseph H.; Ferguson, Julia L.; Leaf, Justin B.; Milne, Christine M.; Leaf, Ron; McEachin, John – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2020
Prompts are commonly used during discrete trial teaching for individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Three commonly used prompting systems include constant time delay, most-to-least prompting, and flexible prompt fading. Most of the research demonstrating the effectiveness of these three prompting strategies have been completed…

Silbaugh, Bryant C.; Swinnea, Samantha; Falcomata, Terry S. – Analysis of Verbal Behavior, 2020
More is known about how to reduce challenging behavior with functional communication training (FCT) than how to mitigate its resurgence during or following a course of treatment. Research suggests reinforcing mand variability during FCT may mitigate the resurgence of challenging behavior, but validated procedures for reinforcing mand variability…

Centone, Kayla; Dilks, Abigail; Tincani, Matt – Education and Training in Autism and Developmental Disabilities, 2019
Manding for preferred items and activities is a critical skill for young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, little research has evaluated procedures to teach children with ASD to mand with their peers. This study evaluated the effects of a teaching package involving least-to-most prompting to increase peer-directed vocal…

Karnes, Alison Judith – ProQuest LLC, 2019
As the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) increases, it is important for practitioners to continue to improve evidence-based practices (EBP) for the treatment of ASD symptoms (i.e., impairments in social communication and repetitive behaviors and restricted interests; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013). It is estimated that…

Feng, Hua; Chou, Wan-Chi; Lee, Gabrielle T. – Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities, 2017
This study investigated the effects of tact prompts on the acquisition and retention of divergent intraverbal responding to categorical questions involving conditional discriminations. A 6-year-old boy with autism participated in the study. A multiple probe design across behaviors was used. A tact-prompt procedure was implemented. The results…

Smith, Dean P.; Eikeseth, Svein; Fletcher, Sarah E.; Montebelli, Lisa; Smith, Holly R.; Taylor, Jennifer C. – Analysis of Verbal Behavior, 2016
The purpose of the present study was to assess whether intraverbal behavior, in the form of answers to questions, emerges as a result of listener training for five children diagnosed with autism. Listener responses were targeted and taught using prompting and differential reinforcement. Following successful acquisition of listener responses, the…

Teaching Multiply Controlled Intraverbals to Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Kisamore, April N.; Karsten, Amanda M.; Mann, Charlotte C. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2016
Reciprocal conversations, instructional activities, and other social interactions are replete with multiply controlled intraverbals, examples of which have been conceptualized in terms of conditional discriminations. Although the acquisition of conditional discriminations has been examined extensively in the behavior-analytic literature, little…

Gevarter, Cindy; O'Reilly, Mark F.; Kuhn, Michelle; Mills, Kasey; Ferguson, Raechal; Watkins, Laci; Sigafoos, Jeff; Lang, Russell; Rojeski, Laura; Lancioni, Giulio E. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2016
This study aimed to teach individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and limited vocal speech to emit target vocalizations while using a speech-generating device (SGD). Of the 4 participants, 3 began emitting vocal word approximations with SGD responses after vocal instructional methods (delays, differential reinforcement, prompting) were…

Swerdan, Matthew G.; Rosales, RocĂo – Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities, 2017
An adapted alternating treatments design was used to compare the efficacy of echoic and textual prompts to teach three students with autism (ages 8-15) to ask questions related to two pre-selected topics of conversation. Participants were first required to answer questions related to the topics to determine whether accurate responses were within…

Murphy, Carol; Barnes-Holmes, Dermot – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2009
In Experiment 1, "more" and "less" relations were trained for arbitrary Stimuli A1 and A2 with 3 children with autism. The following conditional discriminations were then trained: A1-B1, A2-B2, B1-C1, B2-C2. In subsequent tests, participants showed derived more-less mands (mand with C1 for more and mand with C2 for less). A training procedure…

Goldsmith, Tina R.; LeBlanc, Linda A.; Sautter, Rachael A. – Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders, 2007
Skinner's conceptual analysis of language has influenced one model of early and intensive behavioral intervention with children, which incorporates verbal operants including mands, tacts, intraverbals, etc. Many studies have examined the mand and tact relations, with little focus on teaching intraverbal behavior. In the present experiment,…

Terrasi, Renee Marie – ProQuest LLC, 2007
This study examined the effects of Dolphin-Assisted Therapy (DAT) as a reinforcer for verbal operant production in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Three children who attended a dolphin therapy program participated in this single subject research study. Baseline data was collected for each child via a video tape provided by parents and…

Charlop, Marjorie H.; Walsh, Michele E. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1986
The study assessed the efficacy of time delay and peer modeling procedures in increasing spontaneous verbalizations of affection in four autistic children (ages 6-8). Results indicated that the time delay was a quick and effective procedure for all subjects. Peer modeling was unsuccessful in teaching the target behavior. (Author)
