What Works Clearinghouse Rating

Holland, Terrill R.; Boik, Robert J. – Criminal Justice and Behavior, 1978
Ethical choices were assessed for offenders instructed to produce favorable versus unfavorable impressions. Pronounced impression management effects were obtained for prosocial and antisocial responses, and high scores on a dimension of change defined by these variables were related to sociopathic features on the MMPI. (Author)

Scott, Norman A. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1980
Tested the discrimination of the MMPI Beall-Panton escape index by applying it to a sample of minimum security incarcerated female felons. The index did not differentiate significantly between escapees and nonescapees. Differentiation between the groups did occur when MMPI clinical and validity scales were considered separately. (Author)

Hovanitz, Christine A.; Gynther, Malcolm D. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1980
Assessed the relative predictive validity of obvious (O), neutral (N), and subtle (S) items of the MMPI MA scale for 86 males. Subtle-obvious ratings were compared to criteria in questionnaire, life-history, and objective tests. Correlations among the criteria were generally insignificant, suggesting that hypomania is not a homogeneous construct.…

Boerger, Alan R.; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1974
Results of Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory data were correlated to see if they were related to demographic and behavioral data. Analysis was done for male and female subjects. A significant number of reliable correlates were identified. (Author/EK)

Holcomb, William R.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Tested the validity of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) with accused murderers (N=96) undergoing pre-trial evaluations. Results indicated four predictors of MMPI elevated scores: low intelligence, history of drug abuse, suspiciousness observed on the ward, and the fact that the accused was a stranger to the victim. (LLL)

Holland, Terrill R.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1976
The MMPI profiles of 359 correctional officer applicants were cluster analyzed, which resulted in the identification of five relatively homogeneous subgroups. The implications of the findings for occupationally adaptive and maladaptive correctional officer behavior were discussed. (Editor)

Morris, Louis A.; Shapiro, Arthur K. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1974
MMPI values were used to find the relationship of field dependency to personality traits and styles of pathological adjustment in psychiatric outpatients. The investigation had separate analyses for the patient's sex and found it an important variable in predicting the relationship between test score and dependency and adjustment. (ED)

Bieliauskas, Linas A.; Shekelle, Richard B. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Examined behaviors associated with high-point D scale scores on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory for employed males (N=1,829) who completed the test years apart. Ratings of being frequently nervous and a decreased percentage of time sleeping emerged as two stable variables that differed between high D and not high D scores.…

Walters, Glenn D.; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1982
Compared the behavioral correlates of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory 4-3 high-point pair and the Overcontrolled-Hostility scale in a sample of university psychology clinic outpatients (N=97). Behavioral correlates of two groups of outpatients were more similar to each other than they were to the group of outpatient controls.…

Holland, Terrill R. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1978
Drug abuse scores from prisoners resulted in two factors describing lifetime use of cannabis versus opiates. Analysis of Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) profiles versus drug abuse patterns indicated moderate, unidimensional relationship between variables. MMPI profiles of opiate users were similar to those identified in research…

Booth, Raydell J.; Howell, Robert J. – Criminal Justice and Behavior, 1980
Megargee's MMPI federal prisoner classification was used to determine validity with prisoners. Similarities and differences were examined and predictive validity was tested. It was concluded that the Megargee system can be used in grouping state prisoners. (Author/RC)

Pena, Liana M.; And Others – Psychological Assessment, 1996
The usefulness of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent (MMPI-A) was examined for 162 delinquent boys in a state training school who were compared with 805 nondelinquent male adolescents and the original MMPI sample of 7,783 male adolescents. The most useful scales are discussed. (SLD)

Anderson, Wayne P.; Holcomb, William R. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Identified five types of violent criminals (N=110) using cluster analysis of Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory scores, and compared them on 24 sociological and behavioral variables. Results showed differences on 16 items including family history, drug and alcohol use, events preceding the crime, and relationship between offender and…

Kirkland, Karen D.; Bauer, Chris A. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1982
Compared Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory scores of incestuous fathers and stepfathers to those of a matched control group. Analyses reflected more pathological scores for incest fathers on the psychopathic deviate scale, the psychasthenia scale and the schizophrenia scales. Results were discussed in terms of a character-disordered…
