Assessed locus of control in a group of 32 boys. Compared to normal controls, hyperactive children scored more external on locus-of-control scale. Examined whether Carkhuff-type counselor responses would improve elementary students' (N=40) behavior. Participants completed pre- and postcounseling Behavior Rating Forms. An examination was made of the case records of 29 seven- and eight-year-old children referred for special class placement (18 of whom were recommended for placement and 11 of whom were recommended to remain in regular classes). When students can manage their environments more effectively, they view the educational experience more positively and find that their present world and their transition to the adult world proceeds more productively. A program of self-instructional research is presented which incorporates the perspective that developmental theories may be used to understand and design interventions to remediate dysfunctional behavior in children. Studied the relationship between the Character Disorder Style (CDS) subscale of the Multivariate Personality Inventory and psychopathy. Results clearly showed the independence of the CDS subscale and psychopathy. Additionally, the manic style subscale was independent from both psychopathy and the CDS subscale. (Author/JAC)

The school records of 40 boys and 20 girls placed in special education programs (for learning disabled, educable retarded, or behavior disordered) were examined to compare reasons for referral and placement.
