Statistical analyses supported two conclusions: (a) The Physiological and Emotional Security subscales of the HSS are highly saturated with psychopathological symptomatology; and (b) the remaining five HSS subscales measure dimensions of clients' psychosocial and vocational adjustment that are relatively independent of psychopathology. The training program combined self-instruction and cue-controlled relaxation as competing responses to provocation. Off-task and disruptive behavior in two fifth graders decreased rapidly during an intervention in which, working in dyads, they served either as peer monitors or point earners.
