The composition of encounter groups changed between 1971 and 1974. Female participants in 1971 reported more hostility and depression than males but by 1974 these differences were reversed. Assessment of behavior disorders and emotional disturbances in children is difficult to achieve because a generally recognized classification system does not exist, definitions of emotional disturbance are not clear, incidence figures vary, and many hypotheses are available.
