The Garifuna's (Black Carib) dependence upon wage labor has most recently involved women as well as men. This article describes the process of their international migration and explores its implications for the maintenance of traditional sociocultural forms, both in Central America and in New York City. Black migration to American suburbs accelerated from 1970-80, increasing the proportion of Blacks in suburbs throughout the United States.
