Luiselli, James K.; And Others – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1985
In Study 1 the aggressive behavior of a deaf/blind adolescent was eliminated through a differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO) procedure combined with a reinforcer cueing technique and brief time-out. In Study 2 DRO reduced stereotypic eye-pressing by a young blind hearing-impaired child. (Author/CL)

Differential Reinforcement to Reduce Disruptive Behaviors in a Blind Boy with a Learning Disability.

Heitzman, A. J.; Alimena, M. J. – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1991
Differential reinforcement of low rates of responding was used to reduce the disruptive behaviors of a blind 12-year-old boy with a learning disability. The subject earned reinforcers by not exceeding the established criterion of disruptive behaviors. An overall 88 percent reduction in target behaviors was observed across a 26-day period.…

Gerra, Linda Lanting – 1981
The paper reports on a program to change behaviors of six blind multihandicapped adolescents with severe behavior disorders at the New York Institute for the Education of the Blind. Examples are drawn of the program's effects on a 17 year old male, Joe. Program principles include reduction of stressful situations for the students, expansion of…

Luiselli, James K. – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1985
Two studies examined on the effectiveness of behavioral training for improving prevocational work performance of three blind, severely retarded women. Combined response-contingent prompting and reinforcement procedures increased the quantity of tasks completed. Data also demonstrated that attentional behavior was enhanced following training and…

McClure, John T.; And Others – Mental Retardation, 1986
An automated training device was used in the differential reinforcement of an incompatible behavior in the treatment of hand mouthing of a boy with profound mental retardation and blindness. The presentation of music and vibration contingent upon bilateral hand-switch placement resulted in substantial and sustained reduction of hand mouthing with…

Hobbis, V.; Williams, T. – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1986
The article discusses the uses of mechanical vibration for stimulating, rewarding, and suppressing behaviors of multiply handicapped blind children. Suggestions for further research and refinement of the techniques are made. (Author)

Hill, Jane; And Others – Education and Treatment of Children, 1989
The study found significant improvements in behavior when a profoundly mentally retarded blind subject was reinforced with music. The young woman also discriminated among different types of music, and behavior rates varied accordingly. (Author/DB)

Strawbridge, Leigh A.; And Others – Education and Training in Mental Retardation, 1989
The article describes a training program which effectively taught a profoundly retarded and blind nine-year-old boy to use a walker. One year follow-up indicated maintenance of treatment gains. Ambulation training was correlated with a significant reduction in stereotypic behavior. (Author/DB)

Crawford, Michael E. – 1980
The literature on symbolic forms of communication was reviewed, and an experimental program was designed to teach a single set of vocabulary to a group of four institutionalized profoundly retarded blind/mute adults through the use of gestures. Literature about deaf/blind persons suggested the use of coactive movement techniques and facilitation…
