Luiselli, James K. – Education and Treatment of Children, 1988
In this case study, a six-year-old, multihandicapped child was treated for self-injurious arm-biting using two response contingent deceleration procedures and two forms of sensory extinction. Only the sensory extinction procedure with protective cuffs reduced arm-biting to manageable levels. (Author/DB)

Sisson, Lori A.; And Others – Research in Developmental Disabilities, 1988
The effectiveness of a graduated guidance procedure for increasing independence in dressing was examined in a multiple baseline analysis across behaviors with two multihandicapped children (ages nine and five). Results showed both children learned dressing skills with generalization of training to similar garments and maintenance of skills and 18…

Yarnall, Gary D. – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1980
A 21-year-old woman who was totally blind, severely hearing impaired, functionally retarded, behaviorally resistive, self-stimulative, self-abusive, and who lacked basic communication skills, was taught to sit quietly and wait on command. (Author/PHR)

Michell, Sheila; And Others – B. C. Journal of Special Education, 1988
A forward graduated guidance procedure was used to increase the independent dressing skills of two profoundly multihandicapped adolescents living in a noninstitutional environment. One subject reached criterion and treatment gains generalized to other settings. The other subject failed to reach criterion but required fewer prompts after training.…

Hill, Jane; And Others – Education and Treatment of Children, 1989
The study found significant improvements in behavior when a profoundly mentally retarded blind subject was reinforced with music. The young woman also discriminated among different types of music, and behavior rates varied accordingly. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Adults, Behavior Modification, Behavior Problems, Blindness

Lueck, Amanda Hall; Dornbusch, Helen; Hart, Jeri – Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness, 1999
This exploratory study investigated the effects of the components of visual environmental management, visual skills training, and visually dependent task training on the performance of visual behaviors of a toddler with multiple disabilities including cortical visual impairment. Training components were implemented by the mother during daily…

Hinderscheit, Linda R.; Reichle, Joe – AAC Augmentative and Alternative Communication, 1987
A severely intellectually delayed and physically handicapped 18-year-old woman was taught a direct select color encoding strategy as a potential means of increasing the available vocabulary on her communication board using a "chained matching-to-sample" procedure. The skill was maintained and generalized to new exemplars. (Author/DB)

Taylor, R. G. – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1987
A multiple-probe design demonstrated the effectiveness of a match to sample paradigm using tactile recipe cards, a positional tray, and systematic prompting in teaching a severely handicapped deaf-blind retarded woman the independent preparation of three breakfast foods. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Case Studies, Daily Living Skills, Deaf Blind, Instructional Effectiveness
Strawbridge, Leigh A.; And Others – Education and Training in Mental Retardation, 1989
The article describes a training program which effectively taught a profoundly retarded and blind nine-year-old boy to use a walker. One year follow-up indicated maintenance of treatment gains. Ambulation training was correlated with a significant reduction in stereotypic behavior. (Author/DB)

Reese, R. Matthew; Sherman, James A.; Sheldon, Jan B. – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1998
A treatment package consisting of differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO), token fines, and prompted relaxation was used to reduce the agitated-disruptive behavior of a young adult with autism and mental retardation living in a community group home. DRO procedures were partially implemented by a peer with Down syndrome. Baseline rates…

Friedl, Michael; And Others – 1977
The study investigated the effects of the overcorrection procedure of functional movement training (in which praise and physical contact are offered for correct positions) on establishing and maintaining the visual attending of a multihandicapped, profoundly retarded learner (20 years old) in a public school program. The effectiveness of positive…

Umezu, Hachizo – 1974
The monograph describes the development of verbal behavior over a 20-year period in two deaf Japanese children (5- and 7-years-old when first contacted by the author) with whom previous training attempts had failed. It is noted that prior training methods which had succeeded with Laura Bridgman and Helen Keller failed with these two children. A…

McKelvey, Jenifer L.; And Others – Teaching Exceptional Children, 1992
A self-help skills instructional program used graduated guidance as a method of teaching independent dressing to an 11-year-old girl with profound mental retardation, seizure disorder, deafness, and blindness. Dressing skills improved with instruction and were maintained. Task analyses are presented for putting on socks, shorts, and shirts. (JDD)

Brown, Carrie C.; Cavalier, Al R. – Journal of Special Education Technology, 1992
This study of an adult with severe mental retardation and severe physical impairments found that the subject learned the cause-and-effect relationship between her voice commands and resultant action controlling environmental devices, differentiated various vocalizations for different environmental actions, and experienced positive affect when she…

Kratzer, Debra A.; And Others – Education and Treatment of Children, 1993
Time delay was used to successfully teach two elementary aged children with severe mental retardation and significant concomitant handicapping conditions how to request food or drink. Suggestions for implementing time delay with students not able to generalize imitative responses or to wait for a prompt are offered. (Author/DB)
