Global Perspectives and Childhood
Liu, Karen
Childhood Education, v83 n5 p308-A Ann 2007
Although the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) has a long history, beginning with its inception in 1892 as the International Kindergarten Union, members have more recently made a commitment to value the international perspectives in their goals and actions. Since then, ACEI has adopted as its mission to "promote and support in the global community the optimal education and development of children, from birth through early adolescence, and to influence the professional growth of educators and the efforts of those who are committed to the needs of children in a changing society." In this article, the author talks about how they can utilize ACEI's rich resources and the global perspectives of their members to enrich children's education and empower teachers. She emphasizes the importance of "thinking globally and acting locally." She talks about the Global Guidelines for Early Childhood Education and Care which is a good example of a joint effort among early childhood educators across different organizations (ACEI and OMEP-USNC) to better serve the world's children. It is their intention to share the Global Guidelines with early childhood educators around the world. The Global Guidelines will be used as a benchmark to assess quality programs around the world. ACEI has a long tradition and history of valuing global perspectives and is able to provide the platform to encourage the sharing and exchange of global perspective among members. She encourages everyone to work together jointly to provide professional growth opportunities for teachers and a commitment to a high quality of education for children.
