Champions for Children: Reaching Out to Urban Youth through Sports
Power, F. Clark; Sheehan, Kristin K.; McCarthy, Kara; Carnevale, Tom
Journal of Research in Character Education, v8 n2 p75-85 2010
Character educators have a special responsibility to look after children's welfare. At a time when one out of every five children lives below the poverty line, and the United States ranks next to last among the wealthiest nations of the world in looking after the well-being of its children, character educators cannot be silent. Character educators cannot be content to merely teach virtue; they must become champions of children by advocating for them and helping them to be able to stand up for themselves. Working with the South Bend Chief of Police, we are developing a model for the champion character education that addresses the structural inequalities that stand in the way of our very future as a society.
