Intuitive and Empirical Prototypes in Childhood Psychopathology.

The validity of intuitive classifications of experienced diagnosticians was examined for 10 experienced diagnosticians evaluating child behavior problems. Results showed that intuitive prototypes corresponded poorly with empirical core syndromes in the assessment system of T. M. Achenbach and others. Reasons for differences are discussed. (SLD)

A Normative Typology of Healthy, Subclinical, and Clinical Behavior Styles among American Children and Adolescents.

An empirical typology of behavior styles was developed to define distinct variations of healthy, marginal, at-risk, and maladjusted behavior using a stratified national sample of 1,400 youths aged 5 to 17 years. Results are compared with recent epidemiological studies, and application of the typology is demonstrated. (SLD)

An empirically based paradigm for assessment and taxonomy of child, adolescent, and young adult behavioral and emotional problems is outlined, and the standardization procedures used to assess problems reported by different informants for large clinical samples are discussed. Comparison of scores from a normative sample of 880 children and 276 sexually abused children on the Child Sexual Behavior Inventory (CSBI), a checklist for 2- through 12-year-old children, supports the reliability and validity of the instrument. Principal factor analysis and promax rotations were performed on Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) scores of 2,339 clinically referred Dutch children. Dutch syndromes were very similar to the CBCL cross-informant syndromes derived by T. M. Aschenbach (1991), supporting the cross-cultural generalizability of the CBCL cross-informant syndromes. (SLD)

Structure of Peer Impressions of Children's Competence: Validation of the Peer Nomination of Multiple Competencies.

A peer nomination assessment of 5 domains of children's competence was administered to 1,249 elementary school students. Factor analysis revealed two positive and two negative factors. Results indicate the structure of peer's perceptions of children's competence, and justify use of the measure to complement other methods of evaluation. (SLD)
