Exploring Transgender Students' Views on University Name and Pronoun Practices and Processes

Journal of College Student Development, v66 n1 p109-114 2025
Faculty, students, and staff--as well as institutional structures such as record systems--can provide foundational sources of support and recognition for trans students (Linley et al., 2016; Singh et al., 2014). However, limited research has addressed the perceptions of students about both the practice of sharing names/pronouns and the inclusion of names/ pronouns in university record systems on the national scale. Adding to this literature, this study uses data from the National Survey of Student Engagement to answer the following research questions: (1) How easy do students perceive it to be to update one's name and pronouns in their student portal? Are there differences among transgender and cisgender students?; and (2) How do students perceive their campus climate around pronoun use? Are there differences among transgender and cisgender students? This report begins by touching on literature about trans and nonbinary collegians, before detailing the methodological approach to the study and the findings.
