The extent to which scientific authors cite their previous publications and the distinguishing features of the citations are investigated. Self citations are found to be more recent and cited more frequently in the text of citing articles than citations of other authors. (Author/KP)

Identifies 621 authors who contributed 1,423 periodical articles and monographs to the geographical literature on Nigeria between 1901 and 1970.
