Cawkell, Anthony E. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1974
The deductions which may be made from inspection of a citation map of the literature are briefly described, and a search algorithm is given for the construction of such maps. (Author)
Descriptors: Citations (References), Diagrams, Maps

Montgomery, Ruth Reinke – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
Personal bibliographies were obtained through a survey of the members of the Society of Toxicology. A group of 183 members showed a 16 percent increase in document output during 1968-1969 compared to 1960-1967. During 1960-1969, 221 members published or made available 1873 documents containing original toxicity data. (5 references) (Author)

Larson, Julian R.; And Others – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1976
Printed bibliographic descriptions of journal articles cited by BioSciences Information Service of Biological Abstracts (BIOSIS), Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), and Engineering Index (Ei) were compared to identify similarities and differences in form, format, and data content. (Author)

Broadus, Robert N. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1983
This study of errors in references made to Edward O. Wilson's book and W. D. Hamilton's articles test the charge that writers frequently lift their bibliographic references from other publications without consulting the original sources. Twelve references are cited. (EJS)
Descriptors: Citations (References), Error Patterns, Ethics, Validity

Rafsnider, Jean – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1975
Comparisons of "hard" and "soft" science in a user study and a citation study are shown to exhibit a previously unnoticed complementarity. (Author/PF)

Egghe, L. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1996
Discussion of bibliographies and sources focuses on the application of martingale theory to the generalized "success breeds success" principle, generalized in order to comprise other phenomena such as "failure breeds failure" and other production rhythms. Items are allowed to have multiple sources, and fractional assignment of…

Small, Henry – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
A new form of document coupling, co-citation, is defined as the frequency with which two documents are cited together. Clusters of co-cited papers provide a new way to study the specialty structure of science. They may provide a new approach to indexing and to the creation of SDI profiles. (12 references) (Author/SJ)

Windsor, Donald A.; Windsor, Diane M. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
Frequencies of the number of references per paper were obtained for information science literature represented by papers cited in Information Science Abstracts, volumes 1-6 (1966-1971). The ratio of papers without references to those with references was proposed as a measure of the scholarly status of a field. (13 references) (Author/SJ)

Krauze, Tadeusz K.; Hillinger, Claude – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1971
A mathematical model is presented which explains the observed exponential growth rates of citations and references in a scientific discipline. The independent variables are the growth rate of the number of articles published and the decay rate of citation of old literature. (13 references) (Author)

Peritz, Bluma C. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1982
Reports results of a study on "case-control" matching using citation counts of 46 papers by Israeli academic economists compared with those of matched controls by American authors. Methodological and technical issues are highlighted. Sixteen references are provided. (EJS)

Marton, Janos – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1983
Citation data of 16 biochemistry and plant physiology journals show that reasons for lower citation potentials of plant physiology articles are: (1) readership is narrower for plant physiology journals; (2) plant physiologists can cite fewer thematically relevant new articles; and (3) plant physiology research fields are more isolated. References…

Tague, Jean – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1981
Describes success-breeds-success phenomenon by single and multiple-urn models, and shows that these models lead to a negative binomial distribution for the total number of successes and to a Zipf-Mandelbrot law for the number of sources contributing a specified number of successes. Ten references are cited. (FM)

Smith, Kingsley R.; Judy, Theodore M. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1972
An operational, comprehensive, economical method for updating and correcting entries in a computerized bibliographic system is presented. The technique was developed in connection with the East African Agricultural Bibliographic Project at West Virginia University. Data modification operations are discussed as well as the limitations of the method…
