Creating a School Policy about Holidays
Wilford, Sara
Early Childhood Today, v21 n3 p18-19 Nov-Dec 2006
This article addresses the issue on school policy concerning holidays and outlines some steps schools can take to keep the children and their enrichment as the focus. In the United States, there are many kinds of holidays: religious, cultural, national, and sentimental. School calendars usually honor some of the most prominent of these. If the center or school has a religious orientation, there will be a clear approach to the significant holidays to be observed, talked about, and celebrated. If the population is ethnically specific, there may be additional all-school celebrations. However, if the center or school is nonsectarian and the population is diverse, then many choices await them. The best rule of thumb is to keep the curriculum creative without contributing to the commercialism that often pervades life outside of school. Whatever activities teachers choose, open ended materials such as colored construction paper, scissors, glue, markers and crayons, shakers of glitter, and bits of material are more than enough to inspire results. Steering away from the precut, identical products, which may seem easier, but are much less fun is also another helpful suggestion that is offered.
