McIlwaine, I. C. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1997
Discusses the history and development of the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC). Topics include the relationship with Dewey Decimal Classification; revision process; structure; facet analysis; lack of standard rules for application; application in automated systems; influence of UDC on classification development; links with thesauri; and use…

O'Neill, Edward T.; And Others – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1987
Two statistical measures are used to compare the Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal Classification systems by applying them to the library science portions of the two systems using a database drawn from MARC records. It is concluded that the measures characterize two different properties of dispersion. (Author/EM)

Richmond, Phyllis A. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1976
The PREserved Context Index System (PRECIS) developed for subject indexing for the British National Bibliography is discussed as a basis for various studies relating to classification which could be made from its initial phrases, strings, entries, and back-up structure. (Author)

Jones, Kevin P. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1974
Analyzes three elements of classification: distinction, grouping and hierarchy. It is shown that models of classification cannot be developed from a binary base. (JB)

Losee, Robert M., Jr. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1992
Proposes an automated document classification system based on the Gray code, information-theoretic considerations, and requirements of classification systems including objectivity, inclusion, linearity, and increasing distance-dissimilarity. A measure to evaluate system performance is developed, and the proposed system is compared with the Library…

Soergel, Dagobert – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1972
The construction of a Universal Source Thesaurus is suggested. Its purpose is to serve as a source in the construction of special schemes, and as a concordance between classification schemes. Certain problems which arise in the planning of a thesaurus are briefly discussed. (13 references) (Author/SJ)

Jones, Kevin P. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
Classification is interpreted so as to incorporate all attempts at the imposition of order upon our observations of the universe. In this article, the fundamental bases of classification are examined: in particular the alien notions of mutual exclusivity and the use of inflexible structures to mirror a dynamic universe. Kirtland, Monika – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1981
Outlines a methodology for standardizing word lists of subject- related fields using a macrothesaurus which provides basic classification structure and terminology for the subject at large and which adapts to the specific needs of its subfields. The example of the Cancer Information Thesaurus (CIT) is detailed. Six references are listed. (FM)

Moore, J. R. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
The interrelationships of the branches of the sciences and technology are analyzed by means of linkages derived from the listing of journals under more than one subject category in the list Source Journals Arranged by Category'' from the Science Citation Index'', 1970. (4 references) (Author)

Haas, Stephanie W.; Grams, Erika S. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 2000
Discusses research describing Web page and link classification systems resulting from a content analysis of over 75 Web pages. Topics include the decision-making processes of Web page authors and readers; syntactic analysis of labeled and isolated anchors; expansion and resource links; and where links lead. (Author/LRW)

Swanson, E. Burton – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1977
A type of descriptor is suggested for application to the description and classification of information systems, and for the development of an information system typology. A list of 83 Function Descriptors developed in the exploratory description of 25 systems is provided. (Author/KP)

Feinman, R. D.; Kwok, K. L. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
A study was undertaken to classify mechanically a document collection using the free-language words in titles and abstracts of physics research papers. Using a clustering algorithm, results were obtained which closely duplicated clusters obtained by previous experiments with citations. A brief comparison is made with a traditional manual…

Yu, Clement T. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1974
A clustering algorithm which is tree-like in structure, and is based on user queries, is presented. It is compared to some existing algorithms and is found to be superior. (Author)

Carpenter, Mark P.; Narin, Francis – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
A cluster analysis procedure is described in which 288 journals in the disciplines of physics, chemistry and molecular biology are grouped into clusters. Tabulation of citings to and from each journal processed provides the basis for clustering. (18 references) (Author/RS)
