Barksdale, Christopher; Peters, Michelle L.; Corrales, Antonio – Educational Studies, 2021
The purpose of this sequential mixed methods study was to examine the relationship between classroom climate and student achievement of middle school students. A purposeful sample of 428 middle school students (6th-8th grade) from a large southeastern Texas school district were administered the "Learning Environment Inventory" (LEI) to…

Schürer, Sina; van Ophuysen, Stefanie; Behrmann, Lars – Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, 2021
Class climate has been focused in the context of school research for decades. One central facet of class climate is cohesion. Whereas there are well-elaborated instruments to assess cohesion in different contexts (e.g., sport and therapy), such an instrument is missing for the school context. The aim of the current article is to present an…

Barksdale, Christopher J. – ProQuest LLC, 2017
The purpose of this sequential mixed method study was to examine the relationship between classroom climate and student achievement of middle school students. This study included a review of data collected from the Learning Environment Inventory from a purposeful sample of middle school students from a large suburban school district. A purposeful…

Dorman, Jeffrey P. – Educational Research and Evaluation, 2008
This paper reports the reanalysis of data collected in a study of 3 determinants of classroom environment (viz. year level, subject, and school type) using multivariate analysis of variance and multilevel analysis. Data were collected from 2,211 students in Queensland Catholic and government schools. The Catholic School Classroom Environment…

Dorman, Jeffrey P. – Research in Education, 2009
This research investigated associations between classroom environment and student affective outcomes in Australian secondary schools. The Technology-Rich Outcomes-Focused Learning Environment Inventory (TROFLEI) was used to assess 10 classroom environment dimensions: student cohesiveness, teacher support, involvement, investigation, task…

Anderson, Gary J. – 1969
This study examines the effects of class properties on individual learners. Subjects represented a random sample of 800 pupils in 113 Harvard Project Physics classes during 1968, and were divided into eight same-sex samples--one for each of four learning criteria. The Learning Environment Inventory was used to obtain 14 climate scores.…

Fraser, Barry J. – Evaluation in Education: An International Review Series, 1981
Research on three classroom environment instruments is discussed, including predictive validity studies and criterion validity studies. A heuristic model involving curriculum, aptitude, environment, and learning is used to conceptualize the variables' roles in curriculum evaluation research. Evidence suggests that curriculum influences classroom…

New Directions for Testing and Measurement, 1980
Educational environment data derived from classroom settings strongly suggest the positive contribution that climate variables can make in accounting for learning performance. Such measures are not only related to productivity but may constitute criterion variables in and of themselves. (Author)

Randhawa, Bikkar S.; Hunt, Dennis – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1976
To determine cross-sectional similarity of the underlying structure of classroom environment variables, the Learning Environment Inventory and Primary Mental Abilities Test were administered to 46 eighth grade classes and 50 eleventh grade classes. Structures of affective and cognitive variables became very similar, however, a slight…

Fraser, Barry J. – Elementary School Journal, 1979
Describes modifications made in the original Learning Environment Inventory to enhance suitability for use in the elementary school and reports validation data from administration of the modified version to a sample of elementary school children. (Author/MP)

Sirotnik, Kenneth A.; And Others – Studies in Educational Evaluation, 1980
Methodological issues are illuminated by reference to analyses of environment data. Analyses include clustering techniques applied at the item level instead of the conventional scale level. Clusters derived using different units of analysis (namely, between and pooled within) are compared and contrasted. (RL)

Hofstein, Avi; Lazarowitz, Reuven – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1986
The actual and preferred students' perception of classroom learning environment was measured using a modified Hebrew version of the Learning Environment Inventory (LEI). This (validated and analyzed for reliability) was given to chemistry (N=1080) and biology (N=400) students. Results and implications are discussed. (Author/JN)

Walberg, Herbert J.; Haertel, Geneva D. – Studies in Educational Evaluation, 1980
An analytical, integrating perspective on much of the classroom environment research conducted in the 1970s is provided. The initial development of the Learning Environment Inventory and original research programs are described. (RL)
