Page, Ellis Batten – Psychology in the Schools, 1975
Classroom research is caught between lack of rigor and lack of richness. When multiple classrooms are used, and when the performance of different groups or levels of students is regarded as "repeated measures" (or split plots) and analyzed accordingly, much of the descriptive richness of the interactions may be regained. Komulainen, Erkki – 1971
This study examines quantification of the instructional process through the use of Markov chaining, and by considering the transition probabilities within a framework provided by the taxonomy used, attempts to obtain information about behavior sequences common to all lessons. (Author/DLG)

Long, John V. – 1971
Persons quantifying classroom verbal interaction may obtain varying results as a consequence of using different media forms in their experiments. A study was done to see if the medium used in the codification process has an effect upon data obtained, and if so, what the nature of the effect is. Codification consists of the translation of observed…

Savage, Tom V. – 1980
The uses of various research designs in educational research are discussed. Research methodologies such as social anthropology, path analysis, classroom observation, historiography, interaction analysis, and statistical analysis are described. The educational settings in which each of them would be an effective research tool are illustrated. (JD)

A two-year evaluation of William Glasser's Schools Without Failure (SWF) program was carried out in the New Castle School District in Pennsylvania. In the first year, ten elementary schools were paired on the basis of size, socioeconomic status, and past achievement of pupils. One school of each pair was randomly assigned to begin teacher-training…

Giesen, Phillip; Sirotnik, Kenneth A. – 1979
"A Study of Schooling" is an in-depth descriptive study of 38 purposively sampled schools in the United States. Many aspects of the educational process were examined, from student attitudes to principal leadership styles. Essential to this comprehensive view of education is a view of within classroom processes, including teacher student…

Taylor, Lorne J. – 1976
This paper presents a discussion of evaluation methods which can be used in preschool programs and emphasizes the importance of considering both outcome and process variables. Emphasizing the limitations of research which utilizes only outcome measures, the paper focuses on the benefits of an analysis of ongoing processes and interactions within…

Bellack, Arno A. – 1968
During the 60's, systems for the observation of classroom behavior have become an important area of educational research. Many new systems have been devised both for the evaluation of teaching techniques and for basic research into teaching processes. In the development of such systems the investigator must determine what behaviors are to be…

Brophy, Jere E.; And Others – 1976
Presented as a mini-course on the design of classroom observation systems, this report stresses the necessity of determining the goals of any study before designing the procedures. Only if the researcher has concretely formulated the questions to be answered, can an observation system be developed that will provide the appropriate data. The…
