A study of an analytical system for evaluating class II cavity preparations in primary teeth was developed, tested, and compared with the traditional global evaluation method with respect to intraexaminer and interexaminer reliability. Rating scales that were potentially useful for evaluating clinical performance were identified and were pretested for content and construct validity as well as interrater reliability. A study confirmed the dual hypotheses that the more empathic behavior a dental student showed, the greater the cooperation of children patients, and the more often the patients' verbal behavior is dentist-directed rather than self-directed. It is suggested that training in more socially sensitive behavior would enhance patient care. (MSE)

A grading system that derives a significant portion of the senior student's grade from this type of examination is described. A survey of dental schools revealed little standardization of student requirements for dental radiography in the United States.
