Keating, Daniel P. – 1988
The goal of this research synthesis is to evaluate the validity of the claim that there are fundamental limitations on the ability of adolescents to engage in critical thinking. Critical thinking is defined as an analytic, focused cognitive activity aimed at understanding phenomena at a root rather than a superficial level; a type of thinking…

Brown, Dave F.; Canniff, Mary – Middle School Journal (J3), 2007
One of the most challenging daily experiences of teaching young adolescents is helping them transition from Piaget's concrete to the formal operational stage of cognitive development during the middle school years. Rycek, Robert F.; Stuhr, Sherry L.; McDermott, Jacci; Benker, Jennifer; Swartz, Michelle D. – Adolescence, 1998
Examines the relationship between adolescent egocentrism and postformal thinking in 163 college undergraduates. (Author/GCP)

Boyes, Michael C.; Chandler, Michael – Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 1992
To evaluate the part that nascent skeptical doubt plays in shaping adolescent social-cognitive development, 61 high school students clearly classified as in concrete or formal operational stages of cognitive development completed a measure of epistemic stances. A relationship was found between cognitive and epistemic development. (SLD)

Wagner, Janis A. – Adolescence, 1987
Investigated the relationship between the development of formal operations and the formation of ego identity in adolescence. Obtained significant positive correlations between combinatorial ability and degree of identity, suggesting that high identity may facilitate the application of combinatorial operations. Found some gender differences in task…

Darrow, Dean; Stephens, Sunny – Tower Review, 1990
Discusses how stressful ninth grade is for adolescents, noting that adults' expectations of ninth graders' cognitive abilities may result in stressful experiences that are life-threatening for some (with suicide and drugs being common reactions). Suggestions are made for appropriate teacher education courses, curriculum materials, and…

Seng, Seok Hoon; Charles, Belinda – 1994
A common concern raised by teachers from secondary schools and junior colleges in Singapore is the apparent inability or reluctance of adolescents to think critically and originally. Adolescent thought processes are probably shaped by the change in intellectual pace and quality between the primary and secondary school curriculum. This study of…

Han, Jong-ha; And Others – 1983
The cognitive development and affective development of Korean secondary school students were studied to obtain information for the development of curricula and texts, particularly for teaching the English language.
