Verschaffel, Lieven; Reybrouck, Mark; Degraeuwe, Goedele; Van Dooren, Wim – Psychology of Music, 2013
This study investigates children's metarepresentational competence (MRC) with regard to listening to and making sense of simple sonic stimuli. Using diSessa's (2002) seminal work on MRC in mathematics and sciences as background, it aims to assess the relative importance children attribute to several criteria for representational adequacy…

Clifton, Rachel; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1991
Infants who were in darkness were presented with objects that made sounds. Objects were within reach and out of reach. Infants reached into the target area more often when the object was in reach than when the object was beyond reach. Infants reached correctly in the dark for objects placed off midline. (BC)

Irvine, Dexter R. F. – Journal of Communication Disorders, 2000
This article discusses findings concerning the plasticity of auditory cortical processing mechanisms in adults, including the effects of restricted cochlear damage or behavioral training with acoustic stimuli on the frequency selectivity of auditory cortical neurons and evidence for analogous injury- and use-related plasticity in the adult human…

Ryals, Brenda M.; Dooling, Robert J. – Journal of Communication Disorders, 2000
A bird study found that with sufficient time and training after hair cell and hearing loss and hair cell regeneration, the mature avian auditory system can accommodate input from a newly regenerated periphery sufficiently to allow for recognition of previously familiar vocalizations and the learning of new complex acoustic classifications.…

Legerstee, Maria; Anderson, Diane; Schaffer, Alliza – Child Development, 1998
Presented five- and eight-month olds with silent moving and static video images of self, peer, and doll, and sounds of self and nonsocial objects. Found that recognition of one's image develops through experience with dynamic facial stimulation during first eight months. By five months, infants treat their faces and voices as familiar and social…

Schevill, Helen S. – 1971
This research investigated temporal ordering acuity in children, or the ability to perceive the first of an ordered pair of lights, or of a combined light and tone, when the interstimulus time interval within each pair became increasingly short in duration. Two group-related comparisons were made: (1) differences between slow-maturing and average…
