Paulman, Briana E.; Johnson, Wendi L.; Roberts, Heather; Shierk, Angela – Communique, 2022
This article demonstrates the importance of school psychologists' understanding of which type of cognitive or developmental measure is most appropriate when working with young children with cerebral palsy (CP). Cognitive profiles vary greatly within this population and motor impairments also need to be taken into consideration. School…

Shamir, Adina; Mevarech, Zemira R.; Gida, Carmit – Metacognition and Learning, 2009
This study investigated the effectiveness of assessing young children's meta-cognition in different contexts (i.e., individual learning (IL), peer assisted learning (PAL) and self-reports). Additionally, the contributions of declarative and procedural meta-cognition in IL and PAL, TOM and language ability on children's cognitive performance…

Ivey, Allen; Ivey, Mary Bradford – Journal of Counseling and Development, 1990
Examines practical implications for assessing child's cognitive development and then facilitating developmental growth. Presents concepts of developmental counseling and therapy as systematic framework to integrate neo-Piagetian developmental theory into interview. Example of treatment of case of child abuse illustrates concept in action.…

Steinke, Pamela; Buresh, Stacey – Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning, 2002
Reviews literature on cognitive outcomes of service learning with an emphasis on how convincing the results are to faculty. Explores how self-report measures produce the most consistent positive findings yet are one of the least persuasive measures; other measures based in the cognitive sciences, such as problem-solving protocols, show promise but…

Miller, Ted L.; Davis, Earl E. – Journal of Special Education, 1981
A brief review of these tests is provided, and it is concluded that the procedures possess a number of characteristics that make the evaluation of change in intelligence a tenuous proposition. (Author)

Ridley, Stanley E.; Bayton, James A. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1983
Examined and compared the validity of Friedman's Developmental Level (DL) and Exner's Developmental Quality (DQ) as measures of cognitive development in children (N=134). Results supported the convergent and discriminant validity of both DL and DQ. The DL and DQ were most strongly related to different types of cognitive ability. (JAC)

Liss, Miriam; Fein, Deborah; Bullard, Sarah; Robins, Diana – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 2000
A study involving 18 individuals with pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) (ages 9-21) and 67 controls found total score on the Biber Cognitive Estimation Test for both individuals with PDD and controls progressed consistently with mental age, development being the most dramatic around the mental age of 8 years. (Contains references.)…

Caputo, David A. – Teaching Political Science, 1978
Describes procedures used to measure students' cognitive learning in an American government course. The procedures combined evaluation of instructor effectiveness, teaching efficiency, student learning, and student demographic characteristics. (AV)

Arlin, Patricia Kennedy – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
A paper-and-pencil test of seven of Inhelder and Piaget's formal operational schemes was developed. Multitrait-multimethod cross-validation procedures indicated that the objective test is a valid and reliable measure. It has the advantage of use in a large group setting without the need for trained clinical interviewers. (Author/PN)

Instructional Objectives Exchange, Los Angeles, CA. – 1971
This collection of objectives and related measures deals with one side of judgment: deductive logic and assumption recognition. They are suggestive of students' ability to make judgments based on logical analysis rather than comprehensive indices of overall capacity for judgment. They include Conditional Reasoning Index, Class Reasoning Index,…

Shayer, Michael; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Describes a set of Science Reasoning Tasks which are valid and reliable for assessing the ability of children to use concrete and formal reasoning strategies and can be used by science teachers without professional training in Piagetian studies. Thirty pupils can be tested on each task in about 50 minutes. (Author/DS)

Richards, David F.; Williams, W. Larry; Follette, William C. – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 2002
Scores on the Assessment of Basic Learning Abilities (ABLA), Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, and the Wechsler Intelligences Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) were obtained for 30 adults with mental retardation. Correlations between the Vineland domains and ABLA were all significant. No participants performing below ABLA Level 6 were testable on the…

Hessels-Schlatter, Christine – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 2002
The Analogical Reasoning Learning Test (ARLT) was developed for use with individuals with IQs lower than 55. A study involving 58 students (ages 6-19) with moderate to severe mental retardation found the internal consistency and test-retest reliability of this measure are high. Discriminant and predictive validity are satisfactory. (Contains…

Shemesh, Michal; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1992
Reports a study of 913 Israeli students in grades 7-12 from randomly chosen heterogeneous homeroom classes to investigate students' Piagetian cognitive levels using a video-based test. Results indicate that less than 50 percent of high school students have mastered formal operational reasoning. (MDH)
