Jonassen, David H. – Journal of Research and Development in Education, 1987
This study compared pattern notes generated by participants with word association hierarchies, which is the best current measure of cognitive structure, in order to investigate whether pattern notes could be used for cognitive mapping. The participants were 24 high school physics students. Results are interpreted and discussed. (Author/MT)

Jonassen, David H.; And Others – 1990
Diagrams showing the components of structural knowledge and the theoretical basis for structural knowledge introduce four tables presenting information on: (1) implicit strategies for conveying cognitive structure, including content/structures signalling (Meyer), frames/slots (Armbruster and Anderson), and Elaboration Theory (Reigeluth and…

Jonassen, David H.; Wang, Sherwood – 1992
Hypertext researchers and designers contend that the hypertext information structures may reflect the semantic structures of human memory. Further, they believe that mapping the semantic structure of an expert onto hypertext information structure and explicitly illustrating that structure in the hypertext will result in improved comprehension…

Jonassen, David H. – Educational Technology, 1989
Discusses the field of instructional systems technology (IST) and the definition of its subject matter domain; describes cognitive mapping and semantic relatedness; and reports results of a study that generated a cognitive map to define the structure of research and theory in IST. (three references) (LRW)

Jonassen, David H. – 1988
Cognitive mapping is used in this paper to develop a schemata which represents the knowledge domain or research and theory structure of the field of instructional technology (IST). Using the technique defined by Diekhoff and Diekhoff (1982), the primary set of concepts in instructional technology research were compared for similarity with all of…

Jonassen, David H. – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1993
Compares the effects on the knowledge structure of the learners of using two different Mindtools--semantic networks and rule-based expert systems--for representing the content of a course. Results showed that students in the semantic network class possessed more hierarchical knowledge structures than the other group. (Contains 29 references.) (JLB)

Jonassen, David H.; Henning, Philip – Educational Technology, 1999
Explores the utility of mental models as learning outcomes in using complex and situated learning environments. Describes two studies: one aimed at eliciting mental models in the heads of novice refrigeration technicians, and the other an ethnographic study eliciting knowledge and models within the community of experienced refrigeration…

Jonassen, David H.; Reeves, Thomas C.; Hong, Namsoo; Harvey, Douglas; Peters, Karen – Journal of Interactive Learning Research, 1997
Presents a conceptual foundation for using concept mapping as a cognitive learning strategy and as a method for assessing structural knowledge; reviews the growing body of research related to both applications. Describes some of the conceptual and empirical limitations of concept mapping. (Author/AEF)

Jonassen, David H.; Wang, Sherwood – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 2003
Cognitive simulations are runnable computer programs for modeling human cognitive activities. A case study is reported where expert systems were used as a formalism for modeling metacognitive processes in a seminar. Building cognitive simulations engages intensive introspection, ownership and meaning making in learners who build them. (Author/AEF)

Jonassen, David H.; And Others – 1992
This study explores the effectiveness of an instructional strategy which displays appropriate knowledge structures versus a learning strategy that engages learners in defining knowledge structures by comparing the effects of providing graphical organizers in the form of completed frames with requiring students to complete frames as a study…
