Bond, James A.; Buchtel, Henry A. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Criticizes correlational comparisons of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and the Halstead Category Test (Pendleton and Heaton, 1982) regarding assessment of cognitive abilities. Recommends asking patients to think aloud while performing on the tests as a more direct approach to understanding the cognitive components of the test. (LLL)

Haynes, Jack P.; Bensch, Marlene – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Examined the Performance-Verbal (P-V) discrepancy on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children--Revised as a predictor of recidivism among 78 adjudicated white female delinquents. The P > V sign was displayed significantly more frequently among recidivists than among nonrecidivists. Findings support views that cognitive differences…

Smith, Timothy W.; Zurawski, Raymond M. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Evaluated discriminant validity in frequently used measures of irrational beliefs relative to measures of trait anxiety in college students (N=142). Results showed discriminant validity in the Rational Behavior Inventory but not in the Irrational Beliefs Test and correlated cognitive rather than somatic aspects of trait anxiety with both measures.…

Roberts, Richard J.; Hamsher, Kerry – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Examined the differential effects of minority status in Blacks (N=94) on a facial recognition test and a naming test. Results showed that performance on the facial recognition test was relatively free of racial bias, but this was not the case for visual naming. (LLL)
Descriptors: Blacks, Clinical Diagnosis, Cognitive Measurement, Cultural Influences

Kaufman, A. S.; Kaufman, N. L. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1973
The purposes of the present study were to compare the scores obtained by boys and girls on the McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities (MSCA) and to assess differences in their abilities on the tests that constitute these Scales. (Author/RK)

Query, William T.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Examined the relationship between brain-behavior and hypnotic susceptibility in 70 alcoholic patients, using the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale and its Fromm-Weingarten modification. Results showed the two scales were interchangeable insofar as they measured the same ability, and indicated that hypnotic susceptibility is related to…

Swanson, Lee – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1980
Locus of control had substantial overlap with intelligence, but not with achievement. Analysis suggested that cognitive style and locus of control did not make an appreciable addition to the prediction by IQ scores alone of achievement in second and third grade learning disabled females. (Author)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Children, Cognitive Measurement, Cognitive Style

Golden, Morrie – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1981
Described the development and evaluation of a measure of cognitive belief systems and thinking styles. Reliability and validity results were poor for junior college students. For university and nonstudent populations, cognition scores discriminated social anxiety. The Cognition Scale of Assertiveness is a reliable and valid measure of cognitive…

Zagar, Robert; Mead, John D. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Explored the hierarchical structure of mental abilities by comparing principal component analysis with a hierarchical cluster analysis algorithm on a short test battery for 182 children. Both the linear principal component analysis and the nonlinear hierarchical clustering analysis confirmed the hierarchical organization of mental abilities. (JAC)

Wikoff, Richard L.; Parolini, Roger J. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1982
Investigated validity of the Short Form Test of Academic Aptitude (SFTAA) as a predictor of Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) Full Scale IQ. Tested junior-high students and found the WISC-R could be estimated satisfactorily from the SFTAA, which was shown to be a valid indicator of intelligence. (Author/JAC)
Descriptors: Academic Aptitude, Cognitive Measurement, Intelligence Tests, Junior High School Students

Feingold, Alan – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1982
Analyzed published data on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) to ascertain whether the Information and Vocabulary subtests can function as measures of intelligence. Concluded that the addition of more WAIS subtests will not result in any increase in predictive validity and these additional tests, therefore, lack incremental validity.…
