Hawkins, David – For the Learning of Mathematics, 1993
Discusses the role of abstraction in the development of mathematical concepts among young children. (MDH)
Descriptors: Children, Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Structures, Mathematical Concepts

Kang, Wan; Kilpatrick, Jeremy – For the Learning of Mathematics, 1992
Didactic transposition theory asserts that bodies of knowledge are designed not to be taught but to be used. Discusses didactic transposition, the transposition of knowledge regarded as a tool to be used to knowledge as something to be learned in mathematics textbooks. (14 references) (MDH)
Descriptors: Classroom Environment, Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Structures, Elementary Secondary Education

Potari, Despina; Spiliotopoulou, Vasiliki – For the Learning of Mathematics, 1992
Reports a study designed to identify 9 and 11 year olds' ways of drawing nets of solids and to provide opportunities for them to reflect on their models in whole class discussions. Results indicated that children's views of solids' nets progressed from more global and holistic to more quantitative and analytic. (MDH)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Structures, Concept Formation

Otte, Michael – For the Learning of Mathematics, 1990
Compared and contrasted are the concepts intuition and logic. The ideas of conceptual thought and algorithmic thought are discussed in terms of the world as a labyrinth, intuition and time, and the structure of knowledge. (KR)
