Raghubir, Karran P. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1979
Compares two grade 12 science classes, one receiving instruction using the Laboratory-Investigative Approach, and the other using the Lecture-Laboratory Approach, in terms of certain cognitive factors and associated attitudes. (GA)
Descriptors: Attitudes, Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Style, Educational Research

Nummedal, Susan G.; Collea, Francis P. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Investigated proportional reasoning abilities of 35 college science students using projection of shadows problem while presenting relevant only or relevant/irrelevant information. Field independence was measured using Group Embedded Figures Test. Students in relevant only condition performed significantly better. Degree of field independence…
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Cognitive Measurement, Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Style

Niaz, Mansoor – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1988
Investigates the effect of increase of the M demand of chemistry problems, having the same logical structure, on performance of students having different functional M capacity, cognitive style, and formal operational reasoning patterns. (Author/YP)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Style, Cognitive Tests

Wareing, Carol – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
This study examined whether a relationship existed between field-dependence-independence and scientific attitudes of sixth-grade students in SCIS. Findings indicated that such a relationship was not statistically significant. (Author/DS)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Style, Cognitive Tests, Elementary Education

Lawrenz, Frances; Lawson, Anton E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1986
Presents study findings which explored the effect of teacher reasoning level and teaching style preference on improvement in student-reasoning ability. Reports that students of concrete operational teachers and of inquiry teachers showed greater gains in reasoning ability than students of formal operational teachers and of expository teachers. (ML)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Style, Elementary Education

Winn, William – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1988
Reports on students' study and drawing of five electronic circuit diagrams. Concludes that the success of the students depended upon the amount of detail in the instructional diagrams. (RT)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Style, Educational Research, Holistic Approach

Linn, Marcia C.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Examines content and problem effects of formal thought in 13-year-olds (N=120). Three controlling variables tasks with different content and two question-type tests (analysis and controlling questions) were administered. Findings, among others, indicate that content and problem effects contribute to variance on formal reasoning problems.…

Crow, Linda W.; Piper, Martha Kime – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1986
Discusses the use of mental ability tests for grouping science students. Describes a study which investigated the analytical skill items on the Otis-Lennon Mental Ability Test for field independent bias. Results indicated that the test is biased in favor of individuals with field independent perceptual orientation. (TW)
Descriptors: Ability Grouping, Aptitude Tests, Cognitive Ability, Cognitive Processes
