Suchman, J. Richard – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1977
Presents a position strongly advocating inquiry training in science for students at all levels, but particularly at the elementary level. (SL)

Winberg, T. Mikael; Berg, C. Anders R. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2007
To enhance the learning outcomes achieved by students, learners undertook a computer-simulated activity based on an acid-base titration prior to a university-level chemistry laboratory activity. Students were categorized with respect to their attitudes toward learning. During the laboratory exercise, questions that students asked their assistant…

Chin, Christine; Brown, David E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2000
Explores the differences between deep and surface approaches to learning science. Findings indicate that the deep-surface learning differences fall into five categories: (1) generative thinking; (2) nature of explanations; (3) asking questions; (4) metacognitive activity; and (5) approach to tasks. Suggests that teachers can encourage a deep…

Atwood, Ronald K.; Stevens, J. Truman – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1978
A sample of ninth-grade students utilizing the Intermediate Science Curriculum Study (ISCS) and other materials was used to investigate the relationship between cognitive preferences and science process achievement. The three cognitive preferences examined were: (1) application; (2) memorization; and (3) questioning. (HM)

Hartford, Fred; Good, Ron – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Determined if student questioning skills could be taught within framework of an ongoing chemistry course and if acquisition of these skills depends on high school students' (N=108) level of intellectual development. Results indicate that questioning skills can be acquired by students, regardless of their level of Piagetian intellectual…

Tobin, Kenneth – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Investigated changes that occurred in sixth- and seventh-grade teacher and student discourse when teachers endeavored to implement extended teacher wait-time in a sequence of seven lessons related to probabilistic reasoning. Results indicated that teacher wait-time increased from an average of 1.9 to 4.4 seconds during the lesson sequence. (JN)
