Collings, J. N. – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1985
An increase in the cognitive restructuring aspect of field-independence was found to be associated with an increase in formal operational thought in 11- to 12-year-olds who were given materials designed to achieve this result. Materials used (including computer programs) are described in an appendix. (JN)

Asami, Noriaki; King, Julien; Monk, Martin – Research in Science and Technological Education, 2000
Focuses on the familiar problem of students' understanding of elementary electrical circuits from a much neglected point of view. Suggests that the patterning commonly found in students' ideas might have its roots in the cognitive processing with which students operate their mental models of d.c. electrical circuits. Studies Japanese 10-11 year…

Niaz, Mansoor – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1989
The purpose of this study was to develop a procedure for the evaluation of M-demand of chemistry problems. It was shown that dimensional analysis upon the Neo-Piagetian theory of Pascual-Leone could help science teachers to understand the epistemological basis of their discipline. (CW)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Cognitive Development, Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Psychology

Shemesh, Michal; Lazarowitz, Reuven – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1988
Examined the effects of Piagetian-like tasks' characteristics on the performance of those tasks by different age group students. Indicates the method of task presentation had an effect only on young students' performance, while numerical content had an effect on the majority of students in all grades. (Author/CW)
Descriptors: Cognitive Ability, Cognitive Development, Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Tests

Ryan, Charly – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1990
Described in this study are student teachers' frameworks of purity and the related concepts of the states of matter. The concept of natural versus pure substances, classifying states of matter, and implications for teaching drawn from the results are discussed. (Author/KR)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Classification, Cognitive Development, Cognitive Processes

Monk, Martin – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1990
This study reports a new analysis of data on children's ideas about direct current (DC) electrical circuits. The analysis is theoretically informed by Piagetian stage theory of genetic epistemology. The limits of the genetic epistemology are discussed. (KR)

Comber, Mary – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1983
Investigated concept development related to particulate theory of matter in 130 children (ages 8-12) in two contrasting Warwickshire middle schools. Results are set against background policies/practices in science teaching as revealed by responses from teacher questionnaires (N=60) and analysis of several science curricula. (JN)
