Montgomery, Henry; Allwood, Carl Martin – Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, 1978
Think aloud data were gathered from 19 subjects solving three statistical problems. Good problem solvers differed from poor in that they (1) more often clarified essential concepts related to the problem, or (2) appeared to attend more closely to what was actually asked for in the problem. Deak, Gedeon O.; Ray, Shanna D.; Brenneman, Kimberly – Child Development, 2003
Two experiments examined the communicative bases of preschoolers' object appearance-reality (AR) errors. Found that AR performance correlated positively with performance on a control test with the same discourse structure but nondeceptive stimuli, and on a naming test. Overall findings indicated that the discourse structure of AR tests elicits a…

Fletcher, Claire M.; Prior, Margot R. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1990
In contrast with younger children of the same reading age, reading-disabled (RD) children performed poorly when they were required to independently abstract grapheme-phoneme (g-p) rules and use them to pronounce pseudowords. Results suggest a phonologically based productive deficit which interferes with the learning of g-p rules. (RH)

Ahmed, Ayesha; Ruffman, Ted – Developmental Psychology, 1998
Four experiments examined 8- to 12-month olds on search and nonsearch A not B tasks, a one-location task, and control tasks. Results indicated memory for where object was hidden and expectations of where it should be found. The effect occurred at delays at which infants made the A not B error when searching, and at a longer 15-second delay.…

Drake, Carolyn; Palmer, Caroline – Cognition, 2000
This study investigated acquisition of music performance skills over 11 practice trials in novice and expert pianists differing in age, training, and sight-reading ability. The finding of a strong positive relationship between the mastery of temporal constraints and planning abilities within performance suggested that these two cognitive…
