Hana M. Almohamadi – ProQuest LLC, 2023
Students who have problems comprehending textual material tend to experience failing grades, peer rejection, and even social isolation. Furthermore, students with poor reading comprehension demonstrate poor academic performance in all subjects, not due to difficulty in learning specific subject content (i.e., math, history, etc.), but rather their…

Scheiter, Katharina; Schubert, Carina; Gerjets, Peter; Stalbovs, Kim – Journal of Experimental Education, 2015
Despite the general effectiveness of multimedia instruction, students do not always benefit from it. This study examined whether students' learning from multimedia can be improved by teaching them relevant learning strategies. On the basis of current theories and research on multimedia learning, the authors developed a strategy training for…

Reid, David – Journal of Biological Education, 1990
The complex interactions between picture, text, and learner are examined, based on a 3-D model which describes the context of the learning task. The different strategies that children of various ability levels use in reading from illustrated texts are described. (KR)

Cunningham, Anne Elizabeth – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1990
A total of 42 kindergartners and 42 first graders received either metalevel or skill and drill instruction in phonemic awareness for 10 weeks. Results supported evidence that phonemic awareness is related to reading achievement. The metalevel form of instruction was strongly related to improvement in reading ability of first graders. (SH)

Rahman, Taslima; Bisanz, Gay L. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1986
The differences between good and poor readers using story schema in recall and reconstruction tasks was examined. Results showed that good and poor readers could use a story schema when the story followed canonical format. Conclusions supported the view that poor readers perform quite differently from younger normal children. (Author/JAZ)

Robinson, Karlen – 1985
Of particular interest to those exploring students' learning modalities is the relationship between the visual and auditory systems and reading recall. Among the findings of studies that have investigated this relationship are the following: (1) reading competency is dependent as much on auditory processing as on visual processing; (2) when visual…

Kaufman, Nancy J.; Randlett, Alice L. – 1983
To determine if able and disabled college student readers can be distinguished by their awareness and use of metacognitive and cognitive strategies, 36 freshmen students enrolled in a reading and study skills class were classified as either good or poor readers based on their Nelson-Denny Reading Test scores. After reading five short passages and…
