Galambos, James A.; Rips, Lance J. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1982
Presents experiments which compare two theories of memory for routine events, one emphasizing temporal sequence of events, the other focusing on events' hierarchical structure or centrality. Findings suggest that sequence and centrality information may be computed as needed, rather than precompiled. (Author/BK)

The General Strategies Hypothesis and the Strategy-deficiency Hypothesis are discussed in relation to conclusions made by Symposium participants. A contrast emerges between Borkowski, et. al.'s embrace of the Strategy-deficiency Hypothesis and Turnure's dissatisfaction with it. (LMO)

Peer reviewedAcredolo, Linda P.; Boulter, Lyn T. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1984
Results of two studies indicate a tendency among young children to impose organization on information encoded in memory and in relation to increases in metric accuracy, decentration, and efficient scanning, which enable them to more accurately evaluate when such organization is and is not appropriate. Three experiments (which used adults and 14-year-old children) studied the congruence between textual input at encoding and output in the form of memory reproductions. Results verified a very close correspondence between encoding and retrieval regarding hierarchically structural operations on the information in simple stories. (AN)
