Johnston, William A.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1972
Study to determine whether learning is a phenomenon of input processing, output processing, or both. (Author/DS)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Learning, Reaction Time, Recall (Psychology)
Stillings, Neil A. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1975
A theory of comprehension in verification tasks is developed from a general conception of language comprehension. Models are developed for a task involving transfer verbs "borrow" and "loan" and the possession verb "have." Models and theoretical framework are superior in some respects to constituent comparison and conversion models. (CHK)

Wiseman, Sandor; Tulving, Endel – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1975
Subjects studied and were tested for recognition and recall of target words on lists of cue-target word pairs. List-cued recall was higher than non-cued recall, suggesting that recognition failure is independent of subjects' familiarity with task requirements. This contradicts attribution of encoding specificity phenomena to subjects' confusion.…

STOLUROW, LAWRENCE M. – 1963
A 3-MONTH STATUS REPORT WAS MADE ON THE ACTIVITIES PURSUED IN PHASE 1 OF A LARGER 10-YEAR PROJECT DEALING WITH THE PSYCHOLOGICAL AND EDUCATIONAL FACTORS INVOLVED IN TRANSFER OF TRAINING. REPORTS OF ONGOING PROJECTS AND THEIR CURRENT STATUS WERE PRESENTED. THEY INCLUDED (1) A STUDY OF THE TRANSFER EFFECTS OF WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS TO TASK PERFORMANCE…

Just, Marcel Adam; Carpenter, Patricia A. – 1975
This paper reports on a study concerned with rapid mental operations of the central processor as it performs tasks such as the comparison of rotated figures, mental arithmetic, sentence verification, and memory scanning. The central processor is the site of most of the symbol manipulation that takes place in the human information processing…

LEMKE, ELMER A.; AND OTHERS – 1966
FACTOR ANALYSIS WAS CONDUCTED ON SEVERAL COGNITIVE ABILITIES IN AN EFFORT TO RELATE THESE ABILITIES TO TASKS OF CONCEPT ATTAINMENT AND INFORMATION PROCESSING. THE ABILITIES UNDER CONSIDERATION WERE DESCRIBED AS GENERAL REASONING, VERBAL COMPREHENSION, INDUCTION, DEDUCTION, SPATIAL SCANNING, PERCEPTUAL SPEED, ROTE MEMORY, AND SPAN MEMORY. ABILITY…

STOLUROW, LAWRENCE M. – 1963
A STATUS REPORT WAS MADE OF THE ACTIVITIES PURSUED IN A 3-MONTH PORTION OF PHASE 1 OF A LARGER 10-YEAR PROJECT PLANNED TO STUDY THE PSYCHOLOGICAL AND EDUCATIONAL FACTORS INVOLVED IN TRANSFER OF TRAINING BY USE OF PROGRAMED SELF-INSTRUCTION PRESENTED BY TEACHING MACHINES. THIS MEDIUM WAS CHOSEN BECAUSE IT PROVIDES LABORATORY-LIKE CONDITIONS SUCH AS…

KLAUSMEIER, HERBERT J.; RAMSAY, JAMES G. – 1965
AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO CLARIFY RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN TWO VARIABLES TAKEN FROM TWO MAJOR CLASSES--A VARIABLE RELATED TO CONDITIONS OF LEARNING AND A STIMULUS VARIABLE. SPECIFICALLY, THE STUDY DEALT WITH CONCEPT ATTAINMENT BY INDIVIDUALS AND IDENTIFIED THROUGH FIGURAL OR VERBAL INSTANCES. PERFORMANCE WAS ASSESSED WITH FIVE DEPENDENT VARIABLES--TIME…

Wilder, Larry – 1971
The frequency theory of verbal discrimination learning makes no distinction between silent and spoken rehearsal. Further, the frequency theory predicts that the study-test method of list presentation is superior to the anticipation method. College students, performing under silent and spoken rehearsal conditions, learned 16 low-frequency…

Crawford, Joyce H.; Fry, Maurine A. – 1976
This study was designed to examine the effects of auditory memory, visual memory, and vocabulary knowledge on intramodal and intermodal delayed matching-to-sample tasks. A secondary objective was to assess the value of task performance and trait measures in predicting reading achievement. A total of 52 first graders were randomly selected as…

Rothkopf, Ernst Z., Ed.; Johnson, Paul E., Ed. – 1971
The symposium on which this report is based was motivated by the belief that scientific understanding of how man learns through language will some day help in the development and use of written instructional materials. The main purpose of the symposium was to take stock of the more promising findings and concepts about verbal learning processes in…

CANDLAND, DOUGLAS K.; MANNING, SIDNEY ALPERN – 1967
FIVE EXPERIMENTS WERE CONDUCTED IN AN ATTEMPT TO ISOLATE SPECIFIC LEARNING PATTERNS IN CHILDREN OF VARYING DEGREES OF MENTAL RETARDATION AND TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE PHYLOGENETIC DEVELOPMENT OF INTELLIGENCE. FACTORS STUDIED WERE THOSE KNOWN TO INFLUENCE LEARNING IN NORMAL CHILDREN AND ADULTS--KIND OF REINFORCEMENT (VERBAL OR…
