Argues that the ability to generate and use knowledge requires new ways of designing instruction. The development of thinking skills is discussed in terms of creating content, as opposed to using and remembering content, and teaching strategies for such activities are described. Results of three experiments indicated that latency of correct recognition was sensitive to the influence of a priming treatment.
