Yang, Shu Ching – Journal of Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia, 1996
A study of five undergraduates in an introductory course on Greek culture identified novice problem-solving patterns and cognitive processes when using Perseus, a Greek culture database. Discusses the Reading-Linking-to-Writing Model developed to capture procedural and systemic processes used in problem-solving tasks with hypermedia applications.…

Pillay, Hitendra – Learning and Instruction, 1998
The effects of four different instructional formats (orthographic drawing, isometric drawing, physical model, and isometric and physical model together) on learning outcomes and strategies for spatial tasks were studied with 40 secondary students. Findings indicate that physical models cause the least extraneous cognitive load. (SLD)

Raykov, Tenko – Structural Equation Modeling, 1996
Studied modeling individual latent growth curves of older adults on measures of fluid intelligence by fitting second-order polynomial curves reflecting initial test performance improvement followed by relative stability/drop to the recorded scores of each of 248 subjects. Results suggest substantial plasticity in fluid intelligence of older…

Bos, Edwin – Computers in Human Behavior, 1996
This article compares cognitive processing between natural and artificial language (AL) use and utilizes psycholinguistics for building a cognitive model of the AL user. Discussion covers observations concerning common ground, optimal design, collaborative processes, generalization, and incremental parallel production. Inquiries like this may lead…

Lavine, Howard; Latane, Bibb – Journal of Communication, 1996
Proposes two theories which constitute an interactive and dynamical system from which public opinion may emerge and become organized: (1) a dynamic theory of cognitive impact specifying processes for resolving inconsistency within an individual's attitudinal structure; and (2) a cognitive-social theory of the structural organization of attitudes…

Schaller, Mark; Latane, Bibb – Journal of Communication, 1996
Shows how Dynamic Social Impact Theory (DSIT) and an evolutionary perspective offer new ways of understanding social representations through communication. Outlines the metatheoretical perspective that social representations emerge as structure in self-organizing systems. Explores ways in which DSIT might be further informed by the dynamic…

Batchelor, Ervin S.; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1990
The study with 989 learning-disabled students supported the cognitive-based arithmetic problem-solving model of Dinnel et al. under continuous visual stimulus conditions but suggested a more complex neuropsychological underpinning to arithmetic performance in both visual and aural stimulus conditions. (Author/DB)

Johnson-Laird, P. N.; And Others – Psychological Review, 1989
A theory of deductive reasoning is presented for inferences that depend on multiply quantified premises. It is argued that reasoners construct mental models based on their knowledge of the meaning of the quantifiers. Three experiments, with 54 university students and adults, corroborated the theory.
