Brady, Susan – Annals of Dyslexia, 1986
Because visual short-term memory deficits are common in children with reading problems, a series of experiments were reviewed which examined the role of phonological processes in short-term memory. Results suggest that both developmental and individual differences in verbal memory span are related to efficient phonological processes. (Author/DB)

Anderson, John R. – Psychological Review, 1987
This article has three goals: to set forth some general claims about the course of skill acquisition; to discuss a series of counter intuitive predictions derived from the ACT theory; and to review the state of empirical evidence relevant to these predictions. (LMO)

Dean, Anne L.; Mollaison, Myrna – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1986
Examines children's understanding of what variables and relations are important in problem structures, and their use of these variables and relations in problem solving. (HOD)

Whitney, Paul – Reading Research Quarterly, 1985
Critically examines the assumption underlying research into stages of word recognition provided by R.J. Chabot and others and questions whether their analysis of speed of processing differences warrants making strong conclusions about the nature of reading deficits. (HOD)

Brainerd, C. J.; Kingma, J. – Cognitive Psychology, 1985
Nine experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that short-term memory and information processing share a common pool of scarce resources. (LMO)

Ackerman, Brian P. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1984
Examines the effects of integration complexity on the ability of child and adult listeners to integrate information. Increases in complexity adversely affected children's more than adults' resolution integration. The children's integration performance was affected by theme discontinuity and conferential complexity. (Author/AS)

Daneman, Meredyth; Carpenter, Patricia A. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1983
Individual differences in working memory capacity affect the probability of resolving apparent inconsistencies in sentences. Resolution was less likely for readers with small working memories. Such readers devote so many resources to reading processes that they have less capacity for retaining earlier verbatim wording in working memory. (Author/RD)

Chabot, Robert J.; And Others – Reading Research Quarterly, 1984
Investigates the relationships among the speeds of word encoding, lexical access, semantic memory access processes, and reading achievement of college undergraduate students. Concludes that reading deficiencies may occur as a result of either slow semantic memory access speeds or a lack of organization of information in semantic memory. (FL)

Lacher, Miriam R. – Child Development, 1976
Effects of action content and verbal codability of stimulus pictures, parental occupational status and verbal intelligence upon nonverbal serial recall were investigated in white first graders. (Author/SB)

Keitz, Suzanne M.; Gounard, Beverley Roberts – Educational Gerontology, 1976
Prior research has shown that adults generally remember pictorial stimuli better than printed words. The present study was designed to determine whether memory for these two visual modes might be differentially affected by age. These results indicate that memory processes in the elderly differ quantitatively and not qualitatively. (Author)

Engle, Randall W.; Mobley, Linda A. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
This study tests the idea that visual presentation leads to higher performance on a delayed recall test than auditory presentation. It is predicted that the normal immediate free recall procedure yields a different pattern of results on a delayed test than a condition having immediate recall of each list. (CLK)

Singer, Murray – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Reports on four experiments designed to compare the accuracy of the listener's memory for information associated with the thematic and nonthematic portions of sentences. Results are consistent with the identification of the nonthematic portion of a sentence as the locus of new ideas conveyed to the language recipient. (CLK)

Huttenlocher, Janellen; Newcombe, Nora – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Reports on 5 experiments investigating the effect of blocking words according to semantic category on ordered recall in adults and young children. (Author/RM)

Moscovitch, Morris; Craik, Fergus I. M. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Three experiments were conducted to examine the relations between retrieval and encoding in a levels-of-processing framework. (Author/RM)
