Peer reviewedGolomb, Claire – Journal of Genetic Psychology, 1977
Descriptors: Age Differences, Cognitive Processes, Intelligence, Preschool Children
Peer reviewedOhta, Masataka – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1987
Analysis of the conceptions of spatial relations, size comparisons, and gesture imitations of 16 autistic children (ages 6-14 years) with IQs over 70 indicated an inability to acquire concepts of size comparison and spatial relationships through verbal instructions, suggesting a cognitive deficit of impaired symbolic-representational functioning.…
Descriptors: Autism, Children, Cognitive Processes, Concept Formation
Peer reviewedSchoenfeld, Alan H. – Education and Urban Society, 1985
Discusses histories of three current issues in the psychology and pedagogy of mathematical thinking: (1) the notion of a "prescriptive method"; (2) "associationism" as an explanation for learning; and (3) Gestaltism. Reviews theoretical perspectives that emerged starting in the mid-twentieth century, including behaviorism,…

Peer reviewedHarrison, Andrew – Journal of Education, 1984
There exists a social and educational bias against "practical" activities, and a corresponding snobbery that values theoretical, mainly linguistic intelligence. These misconceptions derive from a misunderstanding of Aristotelian ideas regarding creativity and rationality. (GC)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Creative Activities, Creativity, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedLerner, Sandra; And Others – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1972
Data suggest an ability to use concrete-operational reasoning is not required for doing complex arithmetic, even though it may be necessary for learning these arithmetic skills. (Authors)

Peer reviewedFord, Martin E.; Tisak, Marie S. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1983
A behavioral effectiveness criterion was employed to conceptually and operationally define social intelligence. Using Keating's "A Search for Social Intelligence" as a methodological model, the present study examined four measures of academic intelligence and six measures of social intelligence using three different correlational procedures.…

Nesbit, Larry L. – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1981
Studied the number of eye fixations as a reliable external indicator of internal cognitive processes when undergraduate subjects are unaware that their eye movements are being monitored electronically. A relationship between posttest scores and the number of eye fixations was found. Twenty references are listed. (FM)
Descriptors: Bibliographies, Cognitive Processes, Eye Fixations, Eye Movements
Peer reviewedBrooks, Penelope H. – Intelligence, 1981
First and fifth graders in two IQ groupings reconstructed pictures which were variations on a prototypic picture. In subsequent recognition, children gave confidence ratings on the "oldness" of the pictures. Prototypes were recognized with most confidence. Younger and lower IQ children were less sure about noncases being "new".…

Peer reviewedVernon, Philip A. – Intelligence, 1981
Mildly retarded young adults were given simple and choice reaction time (RT) tests. Subjects' RTs increased with stimulus complexity. RTs of retarded subjects were slower and evidenced more intraindividual variability than those of nonretarded subjects. Several RT parameters were related to measures of intelligence. (Author/RD)
Descriptors: Adults, Cognitive Processes, Correlation, Factor Analysis
Peer reviewedSternberg, Robert J. – Educational Leadership, 1981
Summarizes the work of "information processing" psychologists who study cognition and contends that intelligence consists of a set of developed thinking and learning skills that can, to some degree, be taught. Nine such skills are listed including problem identification and strategy selection. (Author/MLF)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Educational Diagnosis, Elementary Secondary Education, Intelligence
Peer reviewedSeymour, P. H. K.; Moir, W. L. N. – British Journal of Psychology, 1980
An information-processing analysis of intelligence proposed by Eysenck and Furneaux was examined in an experimental study of semantic categorization and free recall by 11-year-old children of varying intelligence. Results, and implications of the results, are discussed. (Author/KC)
Descriptors: Children, Cognitive Processes, Componential Analysis, Intelligence
Peer reviewedRoaden, Saundra K.; And Others – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1980
Results indicated that retarded Ss, relative to normal Ss of all ages, responded particularly slowly to static property statements when objects were animate, and to intrinsic-action properties when objects were inanimate. (Author/DLS)
Descriptors: Adolescents, Cognitive Processes, Concept Formation, Exceptional Child Research
