Kooney, Sharon T.; Murphy, Martin D. – 1983
Story length and plausibility were varied to see whether these factors significantly affect children's ability to monitor their comprehension. A total of 19 third graders and 25 sixth graders were individually read four stories in a counterbalanced order. Each story had one of the following sets of characteristics: long, low plausibility; short,…

Peer reviewedLuria, A. R. – Linguistics, 1975
Considering Jakobson's theory that speech disorders involve defects in paradigmatic or in syntagmatic operations, and that these two categories result in different defects, this question was examined: does the syntagmatic group suffer from defects not only in contextual generation of active speech but also in comprehension of grammatical…

Peer reviewedTownsend, David J.; Erb, Melinda – Journal of Child Language, 1975
In an experiment in which preschool children were asked questions such as "Which box is taller than it is fat?" the results were interpreted to mean that the linguistic strategy of attending to the first clause is more resistant to change than the preference for simply choosing the largest object. (Author/RM)

Dooling, D. James – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1974
Research is reported in which subjects were required to perceive sentences in noise. A series of sentences having the same syntax and rhythm was presented. On a final sentence either rhythm alone or rhythm plus syntax were changed. The results stress the importance of rhythm in speech perception. (Author/RM)

Barclay, J. R.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1974
A report is made of research designed to investigate some implications of the concept of semantic flexibility for memory. Four studies of cued recall produced evidence that interpretation of familiar, unambiguous words varied with their contexts. Considerations raised by the research are discussed. (Author/RM)

Carpenter, Patricia A. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1974
An experiment is reported which permitted the separate examination of sentence comprehension processes and subsequent sentence memory processes. The similarity between the results of comprehension and recall was discussed in terms of a retrieval process that may be similar in both tasks. (Author/RM)

Pilch, Hervert – Linguistique, 1974
This article examines the process of language comprehension by relating the question to aphasia. The premise is that the study of aphasia should lead to a better understanding of the processes involved in comprehension. (Text is in French.) (AM)

Baker, Linda – 1983
College students differing in verbal ability read and evaluated their comprehension of expository passages. Three different types of problems were embedded within the passages to provide opportunities for students to reveal the use of different standards of evaluation. Half of the subjects were informed that they should use three particular…

Kieras, David E.; Bovair, Susan – 1985
In the context of the currently developing theory of procedural knowledge and cognitive skill, the task of learning procedures from written instructions must involve the formation of production rules from the information available in the text. Since this process has not been explored in great depth, a study examined the relation of the production…

McConkie, George W. – 1982
To gain a greater understanding about how people comprehend a set of directions, a macro-level research approach is needed. Researchers must first decide on the domain of activity that is to be investigated. In our society instructions are used for building things from parts, disassembling things, determining the functional characteristics of…

End, Laurel J.; Danks, Joseph H. – 1982
A study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of priming, using the first of several metaphors with common ground (the relationship or similar characteristics between the subject of a metaphor and the term used metaphorically) to facilitate comprehension of successive related metaphors. Ten groups of three to five metaphors with common…

York, Patricia; And Others – 1982
Three studies were conducted in an attempt to replicate previous research concluding that semantic meaning is accessed in the absence of conscious awareness. A pattern mask was used to interrupt the processing of stimulus words after 30 milliseconds; at this duration subjects were not able to identify the stimulus words or even to determine…

Siegel, Marjorie – 1984
A transactional investigation of reading considers comprehension to be more than the duplication of the author's message. Rather, it entails the readers' interpretation of the textual representation that he or she has constructed. Thus, researchers must ask how the reader duplicated the author's creative role. The goal, in other words, is to…

Munro, Allen; Rigney, Joseph W. – 1977
Procedural semantics models have diminished the distinction between data structures and procedures in computer simulations of human intelligence. This development has theoretical consequences for models of cognition. One type of procedural semantics model, called schema theory, is presented, and a variety of cognitive processes are explained in…

Siegel, Linda S. – 1976
Two studies were conducted, with three-to-five-year-olds, to assess the relationship between language comprehension and production and the development of quantity concepts. The asymmetry of acquisition of adjectives, "big" and "little," was also assessed, as well as differences in the acquisition of the underlying concepts. In Experiment 1, it was…
