Journal of Teaching in Social Work, v45 n2 p434-440 2025
On October 7, 2023, Hamas and Jihad terrorists broke through Israel's security border walls surrounding Gaza and launched an attack on Israeli civilians and soldiers in the kibbutz and moshav communities and army bases located in the Gaza Envelop area, adjacent to the Gaza Strip, breaching an existing cease-fire. Approximately 1,200 people including babies, children, women, elderly, and Holocaust survivors were massacred, burned alive and mutilated. Two hundred and forty three children, social workers, elderly and sick civilians, Holocaust survivors and soldiers were kidnapped; some of whom remain hostage in Gaza more than 500 days after the brutal attack. This article addresses the response of international social work organizations to the events of October 7th. Analysis reflects a distorted and false presentation of the brutal massacre and ensuing events. The failure of international social work to condemn terrorist activities and the events that followed promote and advance a moral and ethical platform for xenophobic racism, negating the social work position of standing with those who have been and are oppressed.
