The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures of the University of Cincinnati now has a comprehensive career education program at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This development did not sacrifice the teaching and research programs. (SW)

Suggests a tripartite division of instructional duties in college language departments: (1) language instruction on intermediate and advanced levels, (2) tutorial instruction, and (3) interdisciplinary courses to curtail compartmentalization and encourage cultural comparison. A "German Semester" concentrates four or five simultaneous courses in German language; literature; art and music; science, philosophy and psychology; and social sciences, with faculty as well as outside lecturers from the various disciplines. (CHK)

At the German Department of the University of South Carolina, courses of literature in translation and general cultural courses were open to all students of the university to offset low foreign language enrollments. The content, design and evaluation of these courses is presented. Films were extensively used as a medium of instruction. (TL)
