The college library needs to broaden its collection concept to include the generic book just as college instruction needs to broaden, or discard, the lecture-textbook method of teaching. Effects of a self-paced, individualized workbook in changing student's awareness of library resources and services were measured by pre- and post-tests of 487 freshmen students in designated English classes. This qualitative research study investigates the uses of an American college library by ESL students in improving their language skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Language learning activities in the library are identified, described, and placed in a framework of self-directed language learning and language learner autonomy.

For several decades there has been a trend towards project work, independent study, and guidance from the lecturer rather than instruction.
