Tedeschi, James T.; And Others – Journal of Research in Personality, 1983
Studied effects of verbal accounts offered by a threatener on targets' (N=82) subsequent attributions of the threatener's social motives. Results showed a cooperative account led to an inference of cooperative disposition, a transrelational equity account led to attribution of deceit, and an excuse of ignorance was linked with apathy. Kleinke, Chris L.; And Others – Journal of Research in Personality, 1983
Compared smokers' (214) and nonsmokers' (220) explanations for cigarette smoking behavior to determine predictors of cigarette consumption. Results showed addiction and affective smoking were the most important motives predicting consumption. Presented at the meeting of the Southeastern Psychological Association, Washington, DC, 1980. Scott, William A.; And Others – Journal of Research in Personality, 1980
Develops measures of individual differences in attribute centrality, investigates convergent validity, and explores differences in central and noncentral attribute functions within same person. University students in three countries completed questionnaires. Four relative centrality measures correlated with information required to make decisions…

Cotton, John L.; And Others – Journal of Research in Personality, 1980
While theoretical analogs of misattribution therapy appeared promising, attempts with clinically relevant behaviors have not been successful. This study attempted to increase plausibility by manipulating familarity with the setting and psychological arousal in a clinically relevent situation. Authors conclude misattribution effect is not effective…

Karabenick, Stuart A.; And Others – Journal of Research in Personality, 1983
Used three experiments to test skill-chance activity preference. Men and women (N=368) opted to perform either skill or chance versions of masculine and feminine tasks. Results showed that while men's skill preferences are higher on a masculine task, women prefer skill on a feminine task. (Author/JAC)

Monson, Thomas C.; And Others – Journal of Research in Personality, 1980
Two pilot investigations using college fraternity members present alternative viewpoint to Jones and Nisbett's proposal that negative relationship exists between familiarity with actor's behavioral history and tendency to attribute traits to him. Concludes that attribution of personality traits provides attributors information both veridical and…

Teglasi, Hedwig; Hoffman, Mary Ann – Journal of Research in Personality, 1982
Causal attributions of shy students (N=36) were compared with those of a comparison group of students (N=36) in ten situations. Significant differences between the two groups emerged when explaining outcomes of situations considered to be problematic for shy individuals. Causal attributions may reflect realistic and situation-specific…

Gilmor, Timothy; Reid, David W. – Journal of Research in Personality, 1979
Internal locus of control and positive outcome subjects attributed responsibility for their test results to internal factors, while external and negative outcome subjects tended toward external causations. Ability and luck components were rated in accord with the Weiner model classification, but the effort and task components were not. (Author/SJL)

Lloyd, Camille; Chang, Alice F. – Journal of Research in Personality, 1979
It was hypothesized that true externals and those who adopt an external locus of control as a defense differ in the amount of personal responsibility they accept for task outcomes. Defensive externals varied in their causal attributions as a function of task outcome, whereas nondefensive externals did not. (Editor/SJL)

Reeder, Glenn D.; And Others – Journal of Research in Personality, 1982
Investigated the implicational relations between dispositional levels and relevant categories of behavior. Findings were consistent with the idea that dispositional labels are used to represent a central tendency in a person's behavior. (Author)
