Krakowski, Claire-Sara; Poirel, Nicolas; Vidal, Julie; Roëll, Margot; Pineau, Arlette; Borst, Grégoire; Houdé, Olivier – Developmental Psychology, 2016
To act and think, children and adults are continually required to ignore irrelevant visual information to focus on task-relevant items. As real-world visual information is organized into structures, we designed a feature visual search task containing 3-level hierarchical stimuli (i.e., local shapes that constituted intermediate shapes that formed…

Tek, Saime; Jaffery, Gul; Swensen, Lauren; Fein, Deborah; Naigles, Letitia R. – Cognitive Development, 2012
Previous research has demonstrated that visual properties of objects can affect shape-based categorization in a novel-name extension task; however, we still do not know how a relationship between visual properties of objects affects judgments in a novel-name extension task. We examined effects of increased visual similarity among the target and…

Surtees, Andrew D. R.; Butterfill, Stephen A.; Apperly, Ian A. – British Journal of Developmental Psychology, 2012
Studies with infants show divergence between performance on theory of mind tasks depending on whether "direct" or "indirect" measures are used. It has been suggested that direct measures assess a flexible but cognitively demanding ability to reason about the minds of others, whereas indirect measures assess distinct processes…

Lefton, Lester A.; Fisher, Dennis F. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1976
Five developmental experiments examine the role of context in visual search. (Author/JH)

Perlmutter, Marion; Myers, Nancy Angrist – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1976
Three experiments evaluated color specificity knowledge and related semantic effects on recognition memory. (Author/SB)

Gottfried, Gail M. – Journal of Child Language, 1997
Investigates comprehension of metaphoric compounds. The study asked children and adults to identify referents of various types of these compounds. Findings reveal that 5-year-olds outperformed 3-year-olds but performed significantly less well than adults and that 3-year-olds did not generally interpret the compounds literally. (37 references)…

Duncan, Edward M.; And Others – 1981
Two experiments, designed to examine the developmental changes in the modification of visual memory by verbal information, are described in this paper. In both experiments, first, third, and fifth grade children and college students were shown slides of short episodes followed by oral questions. Questions either described or did not describe…

Ellis, Norman R.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1987
Two experiments examine whether the encoding of location meets criteria defining an automatic process. Automatic processes are not expected to show developmental changes beyond an early age. They appear to be unrelated to intelligence level and unaffected by instructions. Results support Hasher and Zack's automaticity hypothesis. (RWB)
