Atkinson, Donald R.; And Others – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1986
Examined Black subjects' preferences for salient counselor characteristics. The results revealed that the top five preferred counselor characteristics were more education, similar attitudes and values, older, similar personality, and same ethnicity, in that order. (Author/BL)

Examined relationships among client's race, the type of problem for which a client is seeking counseling, and the client's preference for counselor characteristics. Results indicated that the patterns of preferences for counselor race did not seem to differ between black and white participants on the basis of type of client concern. (Author/ABB)

Studied influences on counselors' capacity to make mature moral judgments. Counseling students (N=63) at various levels completed a General Information Questionnaire and the Defining Issues Test. Results suggested that actual counseling experience may be more influential in determining moral reasoning capacity than was originally believed. (JAC)

Student counselors predicted sex-role behaviors of a hypothetical female or male client experiencing academic and personal difficulties. In general, student-counselor attitudes (liberal or moderate) toward sex roles influenced their predictions of client behavior in work and education roles but not in family roles. (Author)
