"May I Have Your Attention?": Exordial Techniques in Informative Oral Presentations.
Andeweg, Bas A.; de Jong, Jaap C.; Hoeken, Hans
Technical Communication Quarterly, v7 n3 p271-84 Sum 1998
Shows two experiments at Delft University of Technology support the conclusion that an introduction makes audiences more willing to listen to a speech. States subjects (in experiment 1) viewed videotapes of professional presentations on "Sick Building Syndrome." Indicates audiences respond to exordial techniques in a predictable manner. Finds (experiment 2) the presence of an anecdote led to higher interest. (PA)
