Community College Honors Programs: Measuring the Effectiveness of Completion and Transfer of the High Achieving Student to the Four-Year Institution
Toso, Alicea S.
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, University of St. Francis
This study aims to evaluate the transfer process of the high achieving student who participates in and graduates from a community college Honors Program. By using quantitative data, the analysis determined whether or not specialized honors programming for the high achieving student allowed the student to complete an associate degree in less time, with fewer accumulated credit hours, and transfer to the four-year institution. Qualitative data was collected to evaluate the student's perception on the ability of the Honors Program to prepare the student to successfully transfer to the four-year institution. Transfer from the community college Honors Program to the four-year institution is nearly non-existent in academic research. Evaluating a program based on a combination of quantitative data and qualitative research on the student's perception of preparedness through the community college Honors Program will address the success of the community college Honors Program student transferring to the four-year institution. This study concluded that the high achieving student who participates in a community college honors program earns an associate degree in fewer credit hours and less time than a peer who chose not to join the community college Honors Programs. Honors Program students also transferred at a 10.83% higher rate than Non-Honors Program students and perceived that they were better prepared to transfer because of the opportunities the community college Honors Program provided to them.
