Bettering Their Best: Impact of Growth Mindset Curriculum on Community College Honors Students' GPA and Perceived Cohesion

ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, University of St. Francis
Honors students are increasingly choosing the community college as a viable alternative to beginning at a four-year college or university, especially given the United States is still emerging from a great recession and student debt is increasing. These high achieving honors students are also expecting an excellent return on their investment in community college acquiring the social emotional and academic skill set desired for transfer to elite schools. Programs must not become complacent in their students simply performing well. Synthesized student-centered honors programs will help foster the most academically competitive individuals who can rebound from failure and seek challenge while at the same time have a sense of belonging to their environment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact a growth mindset information session and discussion would have on honors students' academic performance and perceived cohesion in a large Midwestern community college. Each dependent variable measured whether or not students were reaching their potential and becoming superior candidates for transfer to a four-year school by increasing their perceived cohesion to both the honors program and the community college. This quantitative quasi-experimental study collected data on these variables after growth mindset was introduced to a convenience sample of honors students with first semester honors students exempt in a 60-minute workshop format. The results showed that the growth mindset intervention had no significant impact on honors students' GPA or on their perceived cohesion to their honors program or their community college. Recommendations for future research on growth mindset interventions are also discussed for further consideration.
