You, Too, Can Be Green: The Case for Campus Commitment and Action
Gross, Michael
Community College Journal of Research and Practice, v31 n6 p463-474 Jun 2007
Over the course of a decade, Cape Cod Community College gained regional and national recognition as a leader within the "green campus" movement. Today, it is regularly asked to participate in both dialogue and decision making at all levels. Along this journey it has found a unique identity that resonates across all publics; donors and grantors who had never considered giving to the institution before; significant financial savings--some from lower costs, others from specific "green" choices; a highly traditional state agency that has become a true "convert" to sustainable design and practices; and an ever-expanding list of partners and collaborators waiting to join the winning team. In just the past year, the college has been: honored as a Bellwether Award winner for Governance, Planning, and Finance by the Community College Futures Assembly; invited to present at the Council for Resource Development's annual Washington conference; named to the highly selective steering committee of the American Council on Renewable Energy's (ACORE) Higher Education Committee: and invited to present at the American Association of Community College's annual conference in 2007. Becoming "green" has meant becoming a local, regional, and national leader, a policy-change agent, and a financial beneficiary. These are roles ready for others to play because "they, too, can be green." (Contains 12 online resources.)
